Loose will give more surface area for the flavours to impart but at the cost of filtering to secondary. Whether thats noticeable I dont know.

I bag mine because syphoning to the bottling bucket is the one thing I sometimes have problems with...
 
I use muslin bags weighted down with leafs. I always find pellets melt and are difficult to get out
 
Interesting results and the "non-bagged" beer looked clearer to me.
At a glance it does however I think it's in ever-so-slightly sharper focus, particularly toward the bottom of the glass. This might be giving the impression of slightly greater clarity.

On a related matter though I do recall they did an experiment to do with the impact of trub vs no trub in the FV. As a side observation the beer that had all the post-boil trub poured into the FV actually produced a clearer beer.
