Many (young) people do now though

The future for pubs looks bleak.

SWMBO's mother and sister don't live in town so when they visit (weekly) they meet in a coffee shop that has been there years they have never been in Costa and like me they probably never will, i would rather give my money to local shops.

It is good to see that Costa are investigating the franchise. Blaming Costa is like blaming a pub chain because one landlord is an asshat.

Why bother paying £4 in a pub for a pint of beer when you can brew your own at home for under a quid? It’s about more than just the coffee.
You're talking about atmosphere, amenities, perks and so it's not about the money?
I don't do pubs/bars/microbreweries as a rule either. I'm fairly certain pubs there (UK or Australia?) are more enticing than ones here.
As far as coffee and weekly consumption, on principle, I'd never pay the difference. If someone wants to go the "Friends" route, then that's great.

I dont know the figure but loads of pubs are closing every week. Here in London, you cant keep up with the number of non chain coffee shops opening. I could probably go to to a different one every day for at least 5 years

We don't have many new ones but there are lots to choose from (its a small market town) we have lost a lot of pubs but we seem to have hit a level where they are now all surviving.

I guess all the 'unsustainable' ones have gone the wall and only those who are popular, have managed to diviersify, etc have managed to survive.

I wouldn't want to be a landlord/lady moving into a pub now i can see more pubs closing as fewer young ones drink in them, my son who is 21 and his friends rarely go in pubs and as few of them drive they tend to meet at the bus stop and travel to the next town which is much bigger and has more for them to do.

) having read the article below i am surprised anyone would want to work there.
I'd have told them to stick their coffee up their jacksies...
A proper shower of *****.
... I suppose those of us that can have such opinions should be very grateful that we've never found ourselves in (and hopeful that we will still never find ourselves in) the situation where ... having been sent for an interview by the Job Centre, for such a $hit job (that we don't really want, but if we don't attend the interview we'll find our benefits will be stopped) ... that we then find ourselves being offered the $hit job, and being informed about the (particularly) $hit conditions, where the "rock" of accepting the job is barely any more attractive than the "hard place" of having our benefits (and only means of feeding and housing ourselves) stopped ... but knowing that's what we'll probably end up doing (after all, the "toxic environment" set up by the DWP is designed to make is choose that way) :?:

Cheers, PhilB

Rather than meet in a pub before a night out at a club, the young people I know prefer to "pre-drink" at the domicile of one of the group. Loud music, spirits, mainly vodka, and soft drink mixers, or maybe wine.

I don't quiz them on other mind-altering substances may be involved, as that is very much the province of their Mother (the "chick" I am still married to).

Ahhh. Takes me back to uni days.
Getting hammered on frosty jack or kwiksave "white spirit", dropping a tonne of illegal things then going out to the students Union for a few before piling in to Jilly's rockworld!!!
