On October 14, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed bill HR1337, which included the federal legalization of home beer- and winemaking. Just thought I'd get that in before the day was over here.

It didn't become effective until February first 1979.

He did well. Seriously. Removing a stigma from something so innocuous. It should be done more against laws that shouldn't ve been there in the first place. Good work, Jimmy.

Ah, but creating laws (especially AGAINST things) are how politicians get to feel important
 
Are there laws around this in the UK at all?

I got ID'ed the other day buying a non alcoholic beer which slightly confused me!
I think it's because there's a hint of alcohol in NA beer. IDing for that is dumb. That's why it's done here anyway. Among the many other products, cough syrup is 25% and Purell is 65% ethyl alcohol. I don't think you'd get ID'd for that.
 
Sainsbury's have a proof of age alert for Monin Gomme Syrup (ingredients water, sugar) and wouldn't remove it when I notified them. Something about it being used in cocktails was their ridiculous response.
 
I'm not sure of what the deal is here with children's cough syrup. I'm sure I had alcohol in mine when I was a kid. I'd be okay with a restriction to keep the 13-year-olds from getting drunk on the adult version.
My wife and I do self-checkout at the grocery store. It would be a fun experiment to see which/if any products get flagged by the computer.

That's laughable. Lemons and limes are ******* used in cocktails too. Dopey *****.

@davidfromUS medication would be quite straight forward to monitor control of i guess.

I think i am right in thinking non (or low alcohol) beers have potentially as much alcohol as a ripe piece of fruit. Hency why they are ok for pregnant women etc.

I guess the law is to do with how the product is produced and thats why its age approval needed??

Do all things fermented produce alcohol? Ie sauerkraut and kombucha?
