Am I being unreasonable?

Hello all,

I recently purchased a stainless steel fermenter which I have used perhaps half a dozen times - I'll leave the supplier out of it for now.

As I was cleaning it after the last brew day I noticed what I thought was a black scum mark near the bottom. Upon close inspection I discovered that it was a physical groove, my finger nail can run inside of it, which I believe is from a poor weld which has been uncovered by the grinding finish. I've attached a couple of photos.

In my mind this puts future infections as very likely as cleaning it out cannot be guaranteed.

Am I correct in this assumption and being unreasonable expecting a replacement or refund?

Thank you in advance.

(it's Him)
I'd phone em up and say what the problem is...it's shoddy at best...they might ask why you've never noticed it before but it shouldn't be like that. I doubt if you could make that mark yourself unless you really attacked it.

I have and they are refunding which is great but after the conversation I felt as if I was being a little pedantic.

Nope...you did right.
As bizarre and petty as it seems today I returned a £5 bag of "basmati" rice as far as I was concerned it wasn't..it was short grain whatever.
I got no bother at all...I was told to look through the bags they had which are easily opened and resealed, all of the same batch were "other" ..I found one which matches what I have at home and it's proper stuff...
It's a shame really as the rice had been consistently brilliant and now I need to look elsewhere..

Looks like SS Brewtech. Designed in California, made in China. Mine's ok, but I think you were right to change yours.
Similar design but not quite as expensive as them. Just looking at replacing it with an Anvil.

Makes you think...should you pay for a named brand which may be a bit better but you get the name and a guarantee....or source a local/UK/your country manufacturer and pay extra and get a bomb proof one off purchase. I used to know of a small fabricator in Yorkshire that would build anything in anything...

Stainless steel can be a real pig to weld (depending on the grade)
You should return it, As you say it might harbour future problems.

Sent it in the post today. I feel slightly bad as I know that most traders have such small overheads but with a second look I suspect that these are cracks that could spread with use.

On the up side I had an early sample of my Vanilla Oatmeal stout that I brewed a couple of week ago and bottled for Xmas - WOW.

A chocolate and vanilla bomb - I suspect these flavors will mellow but this could be the best beer I have brewed to date,

Lol that made me smile - just a coincidence of name and initials I'm afraid . ;)
