My hard drive is slowly dying and I need to change it.
Fifteen years back this was something I did daily in my job without any loss of data but can it be done now?
I would like to keep all the settings and info but I guess Microsoft have made this nearly impossible. Can anyone suggest a good guide for a hard drive replacement?

I've done it a couple of times. Install new hard drive. Clone the old one onto the new one with Acronis True Image or similar software and then boot off the new drive.

Make the replacement an SSD. Any Samsung EVO is a good choice.

Desktop or laptop? Does it have USB 3? Will you be using Windows 10?

Agree with the SSD drive suggestion. They're a lot faster. And cheap as chips.

Thanks for all the help, the method seems the same as 15 years back just the names and architecture have changed.
