I'm thinking of getting one of the above to save me from the horror of bottles, and the crazy infuriating world of plastic PB's

So, I have a couple of questions;

  • What's the difference between a party star tap, and a party star deluxe tap?
  • Can you change taps between mini kegs with a CO2 cartridge in place - ie can you turn the tap off to save the gas?
  • Once tapped, as long as you keep the headspace full of CO2, how long will a beer keep?
Thanks!

Perhaps current users of that system fare better than I did with mine years ago. It just seemed more like a barely functional system with issues, than a robust system you’d want to keep around for years of repeated use. The CO2 cartridges were vulnerable to leaking. Moreover it seemed to me that CO2 also escaped the keg through the friction seal between the tap stem and the bung.

To address your questions, I don’t know if there are actually two different versions, or just that the Deluxe package includes kegs, bungs, and CO2 cartridges.

I would be surprised if a CO2 cartridge lasted much more than one keg, but if it does you can turn the gas valve closed to move it to another keg.

Beer will stay fresh for weeks, if it holds CO2 pressure that long. My experience is that these things are better used, as the name implies, for parties where they will be emptied in a day or two, rather than as a full-time replacement for bottles or other keg solutions.

Oh and the last straw was the bulging kegs filled with primed beer that happened to sit in the cellar for a few months. Maybe I over-primed them (doubt it) or filled them before the beer was done fermenting (doubt it), but the kegs were ruint and the beer was essentially lost.

Cannot answer your first question, but for the second yes you can move the tap between kegs. there is a chance of slight leakage from the top seal but i place a smear of vasoline and that seems to help. I find that depending on carbonation i can get 2 sometimes 2 1/2 kegs out of 1 CO2 cartridge. Also if you keep the keg gassed up the beer will last quite while maybe 1-2weeks.

Just recently started using the Deluxe version and after posting questions about it I'm really pleased with the results. I find that kegging is a far easier way of getting your beer into a better dispensing system. At first my beer was going flat after a couple of days once I started to pour it not realising you have to sort of force carb even though you have pre carbed the keg, I found that after pouring a couple of pints I would turn the dial of the tap round until I got a sort of farting noise and put it in the fridge(C02 needs to be cold to be absorbed into the beer) and I repeat this and get a good carbed beer with a nice creamy head.

The manufactures of home brew equipment need to sort this out.

As customers we should not have to mess about with vaseline,PTFE tape,O rings,sanding down tops, ect,ect.
