Where's the best source for the bungs?
I have a couple of Hobgoblins from Lidl, and an Old Speckled from Sainsburys.
The Hobgobs bungs were rubber and came out intact. The Speckled was a rigid plastic that shattered (and left a bit inside the keg, which I now can't get out!)

I get the impression from a video that you 'can' re-use an original rubber bung, but I am going to need to get at least one replacement bung for the SPeckled keg.

Any particular horror stories or recommendations? Maybe by the time next year's Xmas comes round Santa might get me a CO2 injector tap.... but until then I need to keep it simple!

I used these. Work well and have been re-used multiple times without issue as long as you don't over-carbonate

I think the ones Oneflewover recommends need to be used with an injector and tap as you can't vent the can with them (unless I was using mine wrongly). These are the bungs you want:

Actually I've got both and prefer the ones I linked to, but each to their own. The ones with the red insert are vented then stay vented. The ones I linked to you can remove the hard plastic insert from the rubber bung, serve, then replace it. I think it retains condition and carbonation a bit longer. Depends how long it takes you to get through a keg I guess :laugh8:

Then I've been using mine wrong. I supposed that you pushed it into the rubber from underneath and later pushed it into the can. You seem to be using yours like a cork. Don't they blow out under pressure?

Equally, the red ones twist to vent and then you twist back (until the arrow clicks into the notch) to reaseal.

Hahaha, maybe I'm using them wrongly! I've had one blow out under pressure, but it was well over-carbed for a minikeg. No problems otherwise.

I can't get the red ones to reseal properly once vented, I wondered if the 2 red bits come adrift from each other when twisted.

They're not supposed to and when you reassemble the bung there should be a satisfying "click" to indicate that the plastic bits have linked up. But they have to be aligned properly otherwise it won't go together.
Just had a thought: using a bung underneath would be good for carbonation and then when the pressure drops through drawing off the beer, it could be pushed into the can by using another bung from above, which can then be used as you're using it. Doh!

Yep, that'd work with a squirt of starsan first. In fact if I want a higher level of carbonation than I think the 'cork' approach can take I might just do that athumb..

Bother - I bought a Doom Bar minikeg from Tesco planning to reuse for homebrew and was going to use my party star co2 tap on it (because we aren’t going to get through the Doom Bar very quickly). But as far as I can see, I don’t think I can install the party star on the lift-to-vent stopper that is supplied, can I? I don’t think I can push the stalk through the stopper. Or can I? I don’t mind wrecking it to get it out as I’ve got replacements, but I can’t do that when it’s full of beer. Is there a way to push a hole through this stopper?

Drink the beer (if you can) and then drill the stopper out. Unlike other party, kegs, this stopper can't be reused, but you can replace it with a proper three-part bung. I managed to get one out in bits and pieces without distorting the top of the can too much. The tap's different, too. Doesn't like like it'll stand up to too much wear and tear. Haven't refilled the can yet as I've managed to accumulate another four empties and still have six full ones. (This kind of keg isn't used here in sunny Brittany so I have to order as many as I can for a single delivery charge- which is 4 from Schlenkerla in Germany).
