Can anyone help me out with this hydrometer reading.
It was 1.040 plus the 2 lines above.
I took it prior to adding the yeast to my cider.
Thanks

So 1044?
Somewhere around 5.7% if you ferment it right out.

Thanks TC. I'm gonna ferment it for a full 7 days even though the instructions suggest just 4 days is that long enough in your opinion?

It can be long enough depending on the pitching rate and fermenting conditions but is better to wait longer to let the yeast fall out of suspension. Its best to wait til the hydrometer stays the same for about 3 days. It probably will be around 1012ish I should think. I'm not a cider drinker so not sure if the attenuation is for your yeast ect.

For full disclosure I am a self taught home brewer, with fairly low standards of what I consider drinkable. Having said that I do try to get the most out of every brew.

Not sure anyone can say for sure how long a ferment will take. A myriad of factors come into play. Yeast, wort or must, water, temperature and tge stability of the environment.

When the hydrometer drops low enough then it is finished. If it stops bubbling before the hydrometer drops low enough, then one of the factors above is wrong.

Trust your instincts, what's the worst that could happen? Case of the shits if you drink too much of a bad batch and a learning lesson no matter what.

2 lines above 1040 (so, towards 1030) would make 1036. Or am I understanding it wrong?

Anyhow if it ferments too dry, you could always top your glass up with apple juice, for some sweetness. Or freeze apple juice cubes, for the same effect.
