Hey guys,

I've not been on this forum for a long time.. having two small children put an end to the free time I used for brewing!

I started with kits and got into BIAB brewing before I stopped. I use a stainless pot for the brew, cornelius kegs to dispense, and currently have a number of plastic fermenters. The main one is a pretty heavy-duty affair, with a screw-down ring to keep the lid on etc, cost about £40 as I recall.

Anyway, the last BIAB brew I did (a few years ago) ended terribly, with awful off flavours. Most was kegged but the last bit bottled. It all went down the drain, with the bottled stuff being extraordinarily fizzy.. I'm guessing some sort of infection got in during fermentation.

I recently decided it was time to have another go, so this time I bought one of the Festival ale kits, just for a quick run with a kit to make sure I could remember what to do! I'm drinking it now, but again there are slight off flavours... I'm thinking the fermenter has probably got something nasty in there thats caused it all, so I dont really trust it any more.

Looking online, it seems that the prices of stainless FV's have come down a fair bit since I was last brewing. What's the best to look at? I'd prefer not to spend more than £200ish, conical would be nice I think... being stainless it's for life so I'm looking to get something good if I do decide to go for it. I'd then try another couple of kits before dedicating the time to more all grain brews.... wink...

I'm not sure that the replacing the plastic fermenters will necessarily solve the problem. Wouldn't it be a better thing to work out where the problem for infection is. If it is down to cleaning of the fermenters might it not reoccur in a stainless fermenter as well?
