My Internet Connection failed a few hours ago the phone line is fine, anyone else having problems.

This question is aimed at existing customers please don't use the thread to slate talktalk I have been with them over ten years will little downtime.

I am with talk talk and mine is ok - west yorkshire area. Try a good old reboot Chippy might help?

Yep a big outage asad1

We are aware of issues in the Barrow in Furness, Dalton in Furness, Ulverston, Millom and Walney areas at the moment. These are being looked into further and we do hope to have this fixed ASAP.

It's because of all the excited chatter about Chippys favourite band that sing about chippy teas going in the radio tomorrow...

They kept us informed by text message and it was fixed sometime during the early hours, I've been with TT more than 10 years and it's the first time I have lost Internet for more than a couple of hours so I shouldn't moan, thank god for mobile tethering and a decent amount of mobile data.

I too have been with TT for quite a few years and do have the odd slow internet but when I say slow it is usually fast enough to stream with the odd bit of buffering and I do mean the odd time. I was with Virgin before that who were a nightmare and did not seemed bothered at all customer care did not exist

TT phone support can be frustrating especially if you have a Cumbrian dialect so I now use either online chat which I have always found the best or the community forum if you don't need instant help

A lot of the backbone that TT use is subbed out to other ISP's. Their core hardware is pretty robust, I think their general bad press is down to customer services. Plus a lot of misunderstand on how broadband actually works, most problems come from the old legacy Open Reach copper infrastructure or those wall plugs that turn your house 240v into a network.

Phone support used to be shocking but it has improved i still prefer live chat as you can take screen shots of the conversation to prove it happened if you run into trouble later.

I have a RPi running DSLStats so I can monitor all the DSL and connection stats on my line. It samples every 30 seconds and graphs the data, and logs a history so I can go back in time and present those to my ISP if I have issues.

Do you need to have a special router/modem for this or will the Pi handle it all?

Yes, ideally you need a modem with a Broadcom Chipset that you can telnet into, I have a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A Then you can use DSLStats (installed on the RPi) to monitor your line.
Some screenshots of the tool.

I had to get rid of talk talk years ago, the service was fine but I once spent an hour on hold to them listening to 'ahhhhhh ahhhhh ahhhhhh tooooooooogettttttthhhherrrrrr assssss one' and I couldn't face it again.

I am with TT (before that Tiscali). They have been pretty good overall. I am on copper wire but the speed is fine given the distance from the exchange, and the service stable, although I use my own Billion router. I had an issue fairly recently whereby the exchange kit suddenly put me on a more conservative SNR setting (slightly lower speed) but I resolved that through the Members Forum within a day or so. I always get a deal when it comes to renewing the contract so overall I have no desire to change at present.
