I thought this was just the latest annoying buzzword but apparently they have been around since 2014.

So these busybodies want to take away our choice and want us all to stop eating animals, we are carnivores and if we cut all meat from our diets we will suffer the only way Vegans live a healthy life is because they take supplements so as far as i am concerned they can all go feck themselves.

JOIN THE NEW YEARS REVOLUTION
Since 2014, Veganuary has inspired and supported more than half a million people in 178 countries to try vegan for January - and beyond. We have worked with businesses to drive up vegan food provision in shops and restaurants, and have made veganism more visible and accessible through our work with national and international media.

OUR VISION
Our vision is simple; we want a vegan world. A world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change, and drive wild animal populations to extinction.

OUR MISSION
Our mission is to inspire and support people to try vegan, drive corporate change, and create a global mass movement championing compassionate food choices with the aim of ending animal farming, protecting the planet and improving human health.

That made me laugh.
My wife, who refrains from meat as an objection to the way we treat livestock here, doesn't push her preference. She eats tofu and foods with higher percentages of protein. She'll have organic, free range stuff now and then.
Me? This is what I'm into:

Just made this for a celebration on the 1st.

Doesn't bother me. If people want to follow the latest dietary fad, so be it. At the end of the day, if it takes off, it is usually because the wisdom of the crowd is basically right. *Long term* (i.e. outside of current fashion) I don't envisage veganism taking off, IMHO.

There's nothing wrong with being responsible in how we maintain our food supply. Money-driven industries don't want to change even if it's for the better. It's also not a zero sum game. There can be a very happy medium.
The only way I can combat it is with paying extra for organic, responsibly grown, humanely treated, etc. type of meat.

Veganism is one of those things that grows because people that have it well, don't have a historical clue why they have it well, and don't have a historic clue about the origins and evolution of humans (or other animals for that fact, like vegans who give their cats only vegetables to eat).

What I agree with is that we should consume less meat, as far as I am concerned meat could double in price. People would eat less meat, less animals would need to be grown, the farmers would still be able to make a living (although society should also make an effort to cut the middleman out).

They also make the error to think that growing only vegetables and fruit will end animal suffering. How many birds and little animals hide in cereal fields and are destroyed by the harvesting? How much forest is displaced for crops, with the result that animals are displaced or die?

And are they really content to only wear plastic clothing? Yes, well there are of course plant-based alternatives, but especially for footwear they won't get far in the winter here. And plastic footwear makes your feet stink.
And plastics also contribute to animal suffering.

I switched to veganism just before xmas. It's my choice and mine alone. I dont expect other people to do it. I do it for health reasons. If people want to eat meat its up to them.

Just a bit of 'food for thought':

- Humans have a long digestion system just like herbivores. True carnivores have a short one.
- Humans stomach acid is about 1/3 as acidic as true carnivores
- The human jaw can move to side to side as well as up and down like herbivores. Carnivore jaws can only move up and down.
-If you wondering why we have incisors. When was the last time a human killed anything with its incisors? If you look at our fellow primates, e.g. Gorrillas, they use them for display not for killing things

Strangely enough, the opposite is true. Meat/animals are expensive. Most pre-industial societies eat mostly vegan/vegetarian. So if you had a cow or a chicken you'd use it for milk or eggs, rather than eat it . It's only recently that meat has become so cheap because of factory farming and anti-biotics (it was discovered in the 1940's that anti-biotics make animals bigger/fatter as well as kill diseases - some people think that antbiotics may be a contributing factor to the obesity crisis in the west)

How much forest is displaced for crops, with the result that animals are displaced or die?

Most grain in the world (by a massive factor) is used for animal feed. This is one of the biggest causes of deforestation/clearing land. You could feed the whole world human population on a fraction of the grain that is used for animal feed

Each to his own. But when man learnt to make fire and to cook meat, his brain grew larger and he moved from subsistence agriculture to livestock farming and this led to culture and the rapid development of man. We are not carnivores (referring to the previous posts), we are omnivores ad have been for millenia.

The only suppliment vegans have to take is B12. You can get every other macro and micro nutrient from plant sources. B12 comes from microbes in the soil, rather than meat. Animals get it (which is then passed on to meat eaters) because they eat a lot of dirt along with their feed. Before we were so meticulous about washing fruit and veg humans would have gotten B12 the same way (I bet Clint gets loads of B12 from his polytunnel).

If people want to be vegan fine no problem, just like Lbgt pan or whatever, the only problem I have with this ***** is they keep pushing their views on others, the best way I can describe this is my daughter who has a mate who she has known from being 5 years old this mate is gay and keeps asking daughter to go to pride gatherings daughters response we don't have straight gatherings so why have pride, seems right to me I don't go shouting from the rooftops I like women athumb..

There are lots of reasons for becoming vegan not just anti- animal cruelty, which is what most people think about when someone mentions veganism (as mentioned above, I did it for health reasons). Unfortunately the shouty militant ones tar other vegan with the same brush.

(Btw I take it you've never been oppressed for liking women? Which is the reason for gay pride. But I agree. Noone should be pressured into going to gay pride marches)

Like M says it's up to the individual..like a lot of things though a lot who are doing a lot of shouting about something don't have all the facts,do it because it's fashionable, they do it as an image choice...feeding cats veg is just wrong.
From my poly tunnel all veg is soaked in domestos for 24 hours, jet washed and then boiled to death...I then either just chuck it straight in the bin or freeze it for at least two years.
I don't mind who likes what but because I don't like it doesn't make me evil...
I'm off to trap some house sparrows for tea then it's the Alf Garnet box set..
