Helicobacter pylori (HP)- my doctor saw a program on horizon about that and prescribed anti-biotics to kill it off. until then I had awful acid indigestion and was drinking 3 pints of milk a day and popping rennies like smarties. I had stomach ulcers. hp is not something you want in your gut. if causes an increase in acidity in your stomach in an attempt to zap it.

At the weekend my daughter came back from a day trip to York with 4 cans for me. It rekindled my affections, somewhat.

One was a tiramisu stout, which was excellent. Another tasted like body butter but the aftertaste was ok. Another was an epic IPA. Forget the 4th. might be cos one of them was 9%. I'll dig out the names and provide more helpful recommendation due course.

I went to the pub the other day and they furnished me with a salted caramel stout that was pretty darn good.

I think I will scrub the gear this week.

I agree from personal experience, do not drink alcohol when taking Metronidazole. Unless you enjoy feeling like total ****. I believe it has similar effects to Antabuse.

"Scrubbing the gear" may well be my new euphemism of choice.

Further to this thread, I've recently been diagnosed as diabetic......so I'm afraid that beer is a long way down on my priorities (both drinking it and brewing it). Likely I'll sell my gear, because I don't think I could stand to brew it and not 'ave it.

I was in York last Sunday and way overdid it.
Woke with the worst hangover ever, said Ive done with beer and selling all my equipment.
Few days later and a glass of Noa I was back on track.

Just a kinda serious answer from my own experience.

I just came back to homebrewing after a 5 year break. I was T total for 3 of those years, not because I had problems with alcohol. Just because i feel out of love with beer and I suppose "drinking culture" . Honestly taking a break allowed me to address a lot of other problems I had and explore some other hobbies and ways of socialising that didn't involve drinking (not that there is anything wrong with drinking while socialising) .

To be honest i think in the long run it just made me love beer more and I would highly recommend taking a little break to anyone.

The one thing I would say to anyone taking a break though is don't sell your Homebrew gear. That way if you get the itch again like I did it's easy to jump back on the horse.

T1 or T2? T2 is completely reversible with diet

T2

I'm aiming to do just that. I've shrugged off 23 lbs in about 2 months, following a fairly rigid diet. I think I'm halfway to where I want to get to in terms of the weight loss, but now need to improve my fitness (and hopefully my glucose stats).

Thats good going! i did a a dry january last year and lost nothing. once i cut back on carbs it fell away- even though i was drinking a fair few ales each week. maybe try brewing up a brut IPA as they are lower carb?

regarding fitness i found interval training worked best

So I'm guessing you're familiar with how to go about it then? I've been making a few changes in my health an lifestyle over the past year, such as doing intermittent fasting and going vegan whole foods, cutting caffine and sugar. I've been reading that one of the benefits of doing some of these things is a reversal in T2 diabietes

I made a brut blonde ale last year which was very low in carbs

Learning day by day. Sugar has been relatively straightforward. I don't do desserts (maybe the odd well chosen yoghurt. I'm averaging about 1800 cals a day, sometimes less. I'm contemplating skipping lunch on Mons and Thurs to give me 2 x 600/700 cal days a week.

I've stripped out a lot of carbs - and though I'm having brown bread, it's one slice instead of 2 etc.

Brekka is scramblies with or without smoked salmon / Porridge -made with water, and a couple of raisins chucked in to make me feel human.

Dinner can be a salad or soup - i'm much more label conscious. Or an omelette if not had eggs for brekka.

Tea - much more veg, salad and fish. Less red meat. Bacon and bangers have pretty much gone the way.

1 coffee first thing, then tea, water or redbush tea. Had 3 glasses of nice wine the other weekend. Enjoyed that. Spent more than usual cos, well,I ain't buying steaks and ales.

From everything I've read, your doing the right thing. Cutting sugar, lowering carbs, basicallly a mediterranean style diet. Have you come across OMAD (one meal a day) before? It's a type of intermittent fasting(IF) but it's quite powerful if you want to/need to lose weight. It's also supposed to help with lowering blood pressure and T2. I don't do this type of IF as it's not compatible with my energy requirements for cycling/commute but I have tried it out a couple of times

i skip breakfast now and have lunch and dinner within 8 hours and that seemed to work. for lunch i will have eggs on wholegrain, sough dough or rye bread if poss, or sometimes an omellete or falafel with salad. For dinner will have meat or fish with veg or salad but no carbs. snack on houmos. cottage cheese, i'm probs eating too many eggs! carefull with soup- most of them are packed with carbs ( as is porridge!) . fruit wise stick to berries and almonds are good nuts!

If you didnt know it, you're intermittent fasting. The 'type' you're doing is know as 16:8, or you fast for 16 hours and your 'feeding window' is 8 hours. I mostly do 20:5, so fast for 20 hours and have a 5 hour feeding window, basically I just eat in the evenings. Although I sometimes do a more extended fast of about 36 hours.

That's hardcore. I know a few people who do it. My diet isn't great but I train alot. Your diet is the hardest part to get right.
