Any one have any experience of doing this?

A company near me is selling of a load of old barrels at a very reasonable price, thinking it could be a worth an investigation, thinking worst case I end up with a nice table in the garden.

I have cut one up and used chunks in the fv

Do you know how old the barrel you used was? I'm wondering if any flavour etc from these may have disappeared.

Did you find it made much of a difference?

Not sure the age. They came from penderyn distillery. They are used before they use them. The smelt of whiskey and red wine. It made hell of a difference, can taste whiskey in the beer

Aw ok, cool. I might speak to the guys and get a bit more info on them, for the price it might be a go

I used one as a water butt in the garden and was excellent. Leaked a bit to start with though. You have to soak them for a while to get the grain to swell then they will be water tight. The last thing you need is beer spraying out of a joint.
Amazes me they are water and pressure tight in the first place. My hats off to the coopers craft. :hat:
