Anyone worried about the coronavirus then? I was read today in the paper that the Spanish flu,100 years ago killed between 50 million and 100 million people

I'm in two minds about this. As a planet, we're overpopulated to the gunwales with no sign of that slowing down. On the other. I'm looking forward to grandkid #4 coming along in May. Best leave it up to Gaia to sort out as, no doubt, she will.
In response to MyQul, I don't think 100 million is enough to make much of a difference today. I remember that at some time in my youth, it was estimated that there were as many human beings alive as had ever lived from Adam up to that point. That was at least twenty years ago, maybe more.

Bet it makes a difference if you one of the 100 million

It's a worry let's hope they find a vaccine/cure before it spreads too far.

Hand washing is more effective than hand sanitizer. Best is hand washing then hand sanitiser. Anyone who refuses to wash their hands should not work in the food industry. I hope you wash your hands after using the toilet?

"Unlike many other germs, Norovirus can’t be killed by the use of alcohol hand sanitising gels – only vigilance and hand-washing with soap and water will do, says the NHS.”

As I understand it hand washing doesnt kill germs it manually removes them. From what I've read antibacterial soap is no more effective than regular soap because of this.
One of (the more laborious) ways I 'sanize' an FV is just with a j-cloth and plain warm water. I just scrub the inside meticulously, trying to get at every inside surface. This doesnt kill anything, just removes the bacteria (as well as any biofilm they can hide under). I've never had a infection doing this. Tbh, its a bit too labour intensive for my liking so I just 1/4 fill the FV with boiling water and let the water and steam do the work for me, nowadays

last time I looked it was around 1% deadly this was counting infected & suspected or higher if you just counted confirmed infected. Not quite the black death.

At the moment its nothing to worry about. We kill more with cars than colds. once we get to the 250,000 dead mark I will start to get worried, its a few hundred right now which is nothing.

I do how ever have strick (not quite OCD) hygiene, as i work in food factories. I always have a cotton hanky to hand if not two. I dont use the hand wash sinks or driers at work but use alc gel instead. Door handles are deemed dirty and so forth. Cough, snot or hack or spit infront of me the first time you get the " born in a barn" speach or " mummy raised a pig" speach, second time and its a lot louder and more swear words involved, third time and i right off the scale as Mr. Shouty man. If i think you have a cold or runny nose i wont allow you on site to infect others and certainly no where near ten foot of me.

Most 40 year olds plus can actually wipe their own noses and backsides. Anyone under that and its 50/50 they can tie a shoe lace let alone know what a belt is. I have to tell "grown adults" they cant spit on the floor inside a food factory FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who even thinks that acceptable let alone normal?

Turn up in front of me with your trousers by your knees and your banned from site, try to be hip, trendy, millenial, rap or in any way uncivilised human being and your banned from site.

This is going to spread due to these idiots spitting and snotting every where and not washing hands and wiping thier own backsides propperly. in future years will it be known as millenial flu?

some hand gels are only anti-bacterial and NOT anti viral. My previouse employer bought the anti bac only version but fair play once I informed them of its limited protection they were replaced with the better gel.

Handwashing can, if not done correctly, actually increase the biological count.
Did a study on it a few years back, comparing unwashed, washed, and washed and sanitised hands. The results were quite an eye-opener...

We are much better at stopping infections spreading today than we were 100 years ago and we have better healthcare systems. It's pretty difficult to pass on from human to human apparently.

Worth remembering that all three waves of the Black Death originated in China

And the international response is to get all their nationals in the affected area and bring them home. Isn't that how the Black Death spread as widely as it did?

Wasn't the Spanish flue so lethal as mass amounts of people were being shipped round the world because there was a war on..
I think they should shut China til it's run its course..

I'm guessing they probably check them before letting them roam freely around their home countries?
Just said on radio4 that no, the NHS doesn't have facilities for isolating and testing plane loads of people.
