BA have just suspended all flights in and out of the Chinese mainland. I'd be surprised if the situation isn't an awful lot worse than the Chinese media is letting on.

Hand washing is more effective than hand sanitizer. Best is hand washing then hand sanitiser. Anyone who refuses to wash their hands should not work in the food industry. I hope you wash your hands after using the toilet?
Based on the last sentence there will be a lot of men in the UK who are at risk based on my observations on the occasions I have had to use public loos, plus the unfortunates who unwittingly shake their hand subsequently sick...

I think they should shut China til it's run its course..
Really?

"Roughly 80% of active ingredients used by commercial sources to produce finished medicines come from China, Christopher Priest, deputy assistant director at the U.S. Defense Health Agency, said in testimony given last July to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission."

Your plan would cause many more people to die.

It looks like we will be fine.

Two people from the same family have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, the chief medical officer for England has announced.

It is understood the patients were staying in a hotel in Yorkshire, before being taken overnight to a specialist centre in Newcastle.

At least 213 people in China have died from the virus, with almost 10,000 cases nationally.

There have been more than 100 cases in another 22 countries.

Prof Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England said the NHS was "extremely well-prepared for managing infections" and it was quickly trying to identify any contacts the patients had to prevent further spread.

He said the two people could not be identified because of patient confidentiality.

"We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately," he added.

'High chance of getting better'

Prof Whitty said the unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary was experienced in treating people with infectious diseases and there was "a high chance people would get better", based on current information.

"A lot of people will end up with a relatively minor disease," he said.

The small number who go on to be more seriously ill tend to develop respiratory problems which "will be dealt with as anyone else with a respiratory disease," Prof Whitty added.

He indicated that efforts would now be made to trace everyone in close contact with the two coronavirus cases so they could be monitored.

Ian Jones, professor of virology at the University of Reading, said the possibility of further spread was "minimal" because the cases were caught early.

Virus experts said they were not surprised to see cases in the UK, but this was no reason to panic.

"This is still primarily a Chinese emergency as 99% of cases have been in China and all deaths have been in China," said Prof Devi Sridhar, from the University of Edinburgh.

no, but the military has

I do wish our military would get more involved in cases like this, flooding, snow etc. It's good training and should someone actually use this as an attack you would think the military would be better prepared for it than anyone else. Certainly when it comes to mobile decontamination & testing units. This is after all what they should be training for. They only seem to be called in as the last resort.

Remember SARS? (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.)

The news is that the latest Coronavirus has infected a greater number of people from a greater number of countries than SARS.

According to the Chinese government the epidemic should "peak" in about ten days time. If it doesn't then it rapidly becomes a serious situation!

Problem is all the numbers are from China and not real and even then the last ones I saw more people have died than have recovered

Even China couldn't hide numbers of dead like that, though it wouldn't suprise me if the death rate was higher than the 2% quoted. It seems that if you don't have an underlying health condition you'll be fine. What would be frightening is if SARS mutates to infect people before symptoms show like this new corona virus. SARS kills 10% of those infected and even those who were healthy previously.

Did anyone else notice the incredible lack of foresight of the people that hired the buses to take the repatriated brits who landed at brize Norton to the isolation place in Wirral?

Bus company = Horseman
Number of buses = 4
Nicks90 = snorted coffee out of his nose laughing.

The bus drivers volunteered to drive and apparently didn't wear any protective clothing, they were all given 10 days paid leave and have to keep themselves to themselves.

Having read a few articles it looks like Corona is less harmful than the flu so it will kill the same people flu kills but it isn't all doom and gloom as some are making out.

I didn't say there was a high death rate just that so far more have died than recovered. 213 deaths 187 recovered https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/coronavirus-death-rate-higher-recovery-3798175
Thanks for the link. But it's a silly statement from the paper, not you wink.... The dead have finished dying but those recovering haven't finished recovering yet. Those who die were probably weak and died within a few days. As the disease is only five weeks old and recovery takes from a few weeks up to six months (as the JH doctor says), you would expect more deaths than recoveries THIS EARLY ON. The article implies that the death rate is 50% plus, which is very unlikely.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply a death rate over 50% and apart from the head line I didn't think the article did only that until people recover we have no idea what it will be. Also as I said the numbers are coming from China and not accurate. These guys both have wives in China and normally live there themselves so know more than most and make good videos though this ones very focused on the politics of it.

Its also where I got the numbers from.

@simon12 I tried to watch it but it's pure drivel. Where do they get their numbers from? It must be difficult to collate stats from such a big, populous country. I think the Chinese have learned from SARS that it's better to be open and share health stats. W.H.O. have officials on the ground in China. We'll know soon anyway if cases outside China are very contagious or not and if most people recover fairly quickly.
