I ran the recipe below for an 11.5 L batch through Brewer’s Friend and it gave me 231 IBU tinseth. Why would this IBU be so high? I have brewed this recipe before and it turned out great. You might say why bother if it turned out so well? Well, I am in the process of learning to use Brewer’s Friend so I need to know what is going on.



American IPA


Grain

Maris Otter 3000 grams


Hops

Citra 15 grams at start of boil


Citra 8 grams for last 10 minutes


Simcoe 8 grams for last 10 minutes


Citra 22 grams at turn off


Simcoe 22 grams at turn off


Yeast


Safale US-05 Brewing Yeast

Just checked on Brewer's Friend. The batch size is 11.5 litres (fermentor volume).

The largest Alpha Acid count is for the 15 grams of Citra at the start of the boil. I've also checked all my settings in My Profile on Brewer's Friend and they seem o.k. However, there could be the problem. I am new to Brewer's Friend and all other software for creating recipes. Maybe I have entered some of my profile wrongly, but as far as I can see it is all good.
 
I thought I had solved the problem as I had the last two hop additions (22 grams each) set for the full 70 minute boil. However, I have corrected it to 0 minutes, but it is still showing 140.48 IBU

I just ran your recipe and it came back with 55.4 IBUs.

That's with 15g at 70mins, 8g+8g at 10mins and 22g+22g at 0mins using the suggested AA numbers.

Have you accidentally changed the AA?
 
Assuming an OG 0f 1065 and taking today's alpha acid values from thehomebrewcentre, I get 57.75 IBUs.

12% for citra and 13% for Simcoe
 
I deleted my recipe from brewer's friend and created it again as a new one and the IBU came up as 56.35. However, it would appear that things are still a long way off according to brewer's friend.

I would use Tinseth IBU's personally and do you mean way off on the style which will depend on what you have selected there go back and check it is input correct but as you have just started to use it I would expect its teething problems with using it, I had the same issue when I first used it but you will get the hang of it I am sure

I am trying to scale down a Dead Pony Club receipe but when I put all the ingredients in I only get an IBU of around 15 instead of 35 which is what BrewDog come up with. Can anyone explain why that would be? Changing the hop amounts does not seem to make any difference at all to the IBU number - is that correct?

Check they are added at the correct time and in the correct form i.e during the boil.
IBUs are mostly gained from the boil, you will not get any from dry hopping, and higher IBUs will be attained from longer in the boil.

Thanks folks - I'll take a look at this later and let you know. Also, as I am using hop pellets should I be using the same weight as I would using regular hops? 🤔

I've never adjusted the weight for leaf hops but I'm not 100% sure. If using a hop bag I'd weigh it down though as leaf hops tend to float to the top. In my head there's less surface area against the wort/beer so you extract less flavour. 🤷‍♂️
