I am trying to find a discussion group or wine appreciation forum.

looking to learn about uk shop brought bottles under £50, mainly old world wines.

been rooting around facebook and got no where

you get the old blurb advert from asda and aldi and lidl but not much and only when its won an award

I want some of my wines to match certain styles of commercial wines but i cant seem to find a recomended base wine to use as a comparision wine against my own recipe

Does anyone know of a wine discussion group of old world wines?

Not going to be of any use here as I'll happily drink plonk from the supermarket at £5 a bottle, might stretch to something with a double figure price tag to have with Christmas dinner but think the most I've ever spent on a shop bought wine would be about £15.

Never been a huge fan of old world wines either and here I think how much you spend does make a significant difference. The one exception to this would be Spanish wines as I do like a Rioja.

Main wines I drink are Aussie or Chilean Shiraz, Merlot, and Cab Sauv, and Argentinian Malbec. Sometimes have some South African like a Pinotage and rarely something from the US. Don't drink much white but NZ Sauv Blanc would be my favourite.

I dont mind paying up to £20 for wine and £50 on a bottle of port, Champange its £30 ish max.

I cant taste any better or difference after £30 on a wine bottle, i have brought glasses of more expensive wines but cant tell it apart.

for me its always old world wines, many becuase its next door and i go there alot, i can buy wine in the super markets in france, just as easy as asda, or even find a place to buy from in france on a trip.

I cant do that for ozzy wines or Nappa valley

I drink a lot cab sauv, so i want to replicate it, but why replicate cheap and nasty, i want to buy a good quality bottle and use it as a base grade to aim at, i dont want a 100 bottles, just five,

but in asda theres a 100 white wines and in france 5000, so which one do i buy?????????????????
If i find a wine group i can fall in and get some info, find out whats a good one to buy, i can buy a bottle and try it and use that as abase level marker

out of interest so far i have found that

the FT has a wine page, so does several other broad sheet newspapers
wine anorak is another
theres one called Janice robinson, but thats a pay to view site so i wont bother
found out of a googlle search gq mag did a supermarket buyers guide with some good links
https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/artic...rmarket-that-is-not-disgusting-jane-parkinson

that lead me to aldi and lidl sites as well as phone apps, the supermarket one sounded great but does not exist any more the vivino does but i have yet had time to try it

Don't knock it. In my experience, Asda wine is pretty poor, but Sainsbury, Waitrose and even Tesco had some really good wines. Here, it's relatively difficult to get new world wines at all, and when you can they're overpriced. In fact the same goes for Spanish and German wines- nothing like the choice offered in Sainsbury, for example. Very, very occasionally, Lidl have a foire au vin when I stock up with NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and whatever red is availoable from Oz. There are some very drinkable French wines, but it's nicew to have a change and New World wines are so refreshing and fruity.
