Hi, I had a brew day last week, and whilst it all went well I couldn't chill the beer with my counter flow chiller so had to leave the hops in to steep. In all in, they probably had about 45 minutes in the wort longer than they should between 98 and 80c, will this make my beer far too bitter?

It was about 100g of Galaxy all in all.

Thanks

It does depend on when the hops were added, the temperature, the amount and duration. 100g Galaxy will give about 50 IBU for a 45 minute hop stand added at the end of the boil. That’s really not too bitter so wait and see.

Chances are it will have added quite a few IBU's as Galaxy is usually a 10 plus on the AA scale. You could have taken the hops out after the usual time you take to chill down to 80c. I do a different method and never add hops at flameout as I do no chill and have calculated all my IBU's on the hops I use in the late additions I do and remove the hops at flameout so never have a problem but different people swear by different hop usage

Thanks. It was 100g of hops for the duration.

I think it was about 50g for the steep. Should have made a record.

Thanks though, glad I didn't make too bitter.

You know when you think of something after you have done it, well that is this.

Thanks
