I never had a set but always wanted one. One of my mates did so I used to go around to his and mainly listen in to him chatting to others.

A mate of mine bought a radar detector, illegal in Victoria, only got to use it the once, $2,500 fine and 3 demerit points. He didn't realise that if he could see the police radar, they could see him.

I started in 1979 with a Peggy 3, then a string of Cobra 148 GTL-DX, had some monster beams up like the 6 ele Avanti Quad, and used to live up the hills near Wrexham so always got out well on dx, then started chasing the lady breakers when fm came along, as a rough guide if they sounded gorgeous they were munters, sounded normal were usually minters lol, handle was Red Baron and ssb call was 163WL101, then did my ham ticket and morse test to get the call mm0ati, lost interest but gone full circle and bought a new cb last night to have a go on 10m, cb I suppose was the way we met people back in the day, its to easy this online dating for the yoth these days

Your not kidding, remember putting a 3 ele beam together on top of \minera Mountain, as soon as we was about to test it, the heavens opened then came the thunder and lightening, think I must have broken the record for taking an aerial to bitsDangerous those hills near Wrexham.
Minera...a funny old name...sounds kinda Welsh but it's Latin for ore or minerals. The area was probably named by the Romans due to the lead mining that went on up there...

I interesting history of the place, and of course The Smelt area of Coedpoeth. A mate of mine was into pot holing and he has been down the old shafts up there, says its amazing
FM was Papa Smurph, SSB was TM575.
I'll never forget buying my first brand new GAP 27 1/5 high gain and was tuning it in after mounting it on the chimney 2 storey house.5 section bugger that needed each section positioned to adjust the swr on the meter.Bedroom windy open to shout to each other when finished your task but the neighbour shouted up to me who the mate thought was me so he pushed the button on the Mike not knowing I was still sliding the pole. Nearly got blew of the roof with RF. Mains voltage is a pussy to RF and a spark but maybe not so bright back then.

An RF burn can be a nasty thing, remember saving hard with my Saturday job money to buy a 5/8 wave silver rod, got it all built up to mount on 2 x scaffold poles, my mate and me are at about the ten two position in the lift, it starts shaking badly, we never had the strength dropped it and snapped a brand new hard earned antenna, never even got to the swr stage

A lot of the low band dxers listen on hack green as their noise floor is to high,thats why I live in the countryside 0 noise floor its great
I went the other route and got my amateur radio licence and then passed the morse test. I still keep my licence going but I haven't been on the air for a while. I still have my HF/VHF/UHF gear though.
I am seriously thinking of going for it myself i have been watching a lot of YouTube vids on the subject and it appears you no longer need hundreds/thousands of pounds worth of gear as you can now use things like Echolink with basic gear, its probably frowned on by a lot of hams but as has been said by many in the videos they need to move with the times or their hobby is going to die.

You don't need to spend a lot. That sounds like snobbery value. Some have made their own gear such as low power (QRP) equipment for minimal outlay. I made my own 12V 30A PSU and an Aerial Tuning Unit (ATU). I home constructed my HF aerial too so you don't need to spend a fortune.

A lot pay £1000's for a nice top end radio then stick it on a **** antenna!
I have ordered one of these just to play with and intend to use it as he does (Echolink) when i get my licence, i don't know if C19 is going to make that a bit of a problem at the moment.
