Hi everyone, I have a question I hope you can help me with.
I am all grain brewing and have recently started to put 1/2 a whirlfloc tablet in a 23l batch 10mins from the end of the boil to help clarity. when transferring from the boiler to the fermenter I am losing wort because I am only siphoning down to the debris from the whirlfloc tablet. Can or should I transfer all the wort to the fermenter (including the whirlfloc debris) And if I do, will it effect fermentation and will it settle ok after fermentation.
 
I’ve done it both ways. Not noticed any difference. You’re going to lose a bit of volume on transfer either way. I suppose you could argue that keeping the wort as clean as possible in the fermenter will lead to a cleaner beer but there will still be trub in the bottom of the FV.
 
I run mine through a filter between boiler & fermenter. Nothing exotic, just a small grain bag folder over a funnel. Removes a fair amount of sludge but does maximize the volume into the fermenter.

You should be dialling in the loss when using Brewers Friend or the like, mine is about 3 litres. That is mostly hop debris and hot break, the hot break especially you don't want in the ferementer.

It's good you realise one of your system losses. I leave mine in the kettle as I don't use a hop bag,I just increased the sparge a bit to compensate.
 
If you have room in your fermenter, I'm a proponent of dumping it all in. This is an interesting read: The Great Trub exBEERiment | Results Are In!



In spite of that, you should dial your volume losses into your recipes to account for them and end up with 19L (or whatever final batch size you wish) in the keg.
 
Thanks Guys, I appreciate your advice. I think I'm going to (In the words of a 1939 poster) Keep calm and carry on.
Because I want to make the best beer I can I will adjust my recipes to take in the losses.
