    Power of sharing

I started before Boots and when they came along with their wide range of decent kit and not bad cans, it was a godsend. My 5 pressure barrels are still in use as secondary fermentation barrels, I've no doubt they would still serve as pressure barrels, and I've still got one or two of their old...

Is this going to be the end of the orange man?

So you think the future's orange, then. I'm not so sure. Certainly we don't want a trade deal with Trump's USA. I'm pretty sure we don't want one for everyday supplies anyway, from anybody's USA. Until the UK can start being a lot more more self-sufficient, it's never going to see this nebulous...

    Its too hot!

Thanks. I'll look for that app. Apparently there's one variety of Juniper which is poisonous and needs to be avoided.

    Residual smell in FV

Wash it out with some diluted bleach or chlorine-based cleaner. Rinse well and if there's still a bit of coconut in there, don't worry. It's unlikely to affect the beer.

    Its too hot!

39.8C under the parasol on the terrace yesterday afternoon. Dug out the Fuggles Pilsner and my classic Pilsn Pilsner and had a bit of a side by side. Decided the Pilsn Pilsner was better and that the next Fuggles Pilsner will be made with that malt profile and yeast substituting fuggles for...

Waggle Dance(ish) recipe and want to hit a sweeter FG

I don't think S-04 is the most attenuative yeast in the universe, in fact it;s range is rather wide, but it will convert everything in the honey. Less attenuative yeast usually have a more traditional (English) aroma profile and I think Waggle Dance was more like this. I think you should leave...

Waggle Dance(ish) recipe and want to hit a sweeter FG

Bees see to it the honey is dosed with anti-bacterial elements anyway (basically, they spit in it). It's Chicha., then?

Waggle Dance(ish) recipe and want to hit a sweeter FG

And, to be equally frank, neither have I as I don't particularly like sweet beers. But 67-68 isn't all that high. But all the honey, about 15% of the fermentables is going to leave no trace of body or sweetness and there's only a tad of caramalt. In the days when I used to drink honey beers, I...

Waggle Dance(ish) recipe and want to hit a sweeter FG

You could mash at about 67-68C and then use a yeast which doesn't metabolise maltotriose such as Lallemand / Danstar Windsor or Young's Ale Yeast. Waggle Dance is a Youngs Beer. It's not the same company or yeast as Youngs Ale Yeast from Young's Home Brew, by the way.

    Lager hops with a twist

Come to think of it, I made a Pilsner with English Fuggles. Had an early bottle and it was very promising; It must be about ready by now.

    Lager hops with a twist

Is it now? I've been brewing my "Pacific Pilsner" for a couple of decades. Green Bullet is a cracking hop. Sticklebract was disappointing and Pacific Gem needs to be used with care as it can be overpowering and coarse. Hallertau Aroma works well, too. I think they call it Waketu now. Made up a...

    Summer Lightning recipe clone

According too Howarth's "The Home Brewers Recipe Data Base" 2nd edition. the malt bill was either: 98% Pipkin pale malt and 2% crustal malt, or 100% Maris Otter with Challenger for bittering and Goldings late hops. This comes from Protz' Real Ale Almanac. I remember growing up with Summer...

    Simpsons Imperial Malt

CC I had to phone up for that price as a 25 kg sack wasn't on the inventory. I don't recall a single kilo being quite as much as £2, either, but I might be wrong. The colour range of Imperial is 40-50 ebc while even dark Munich is only 25. Moreover, it's tastes more like an amber malt, even...

Do We All Pack Our Brew Space to the Extreme?

It's an absolutely inspired idea, a thought of true genius. The devil is in the detail.

Do We All Pack Our Brew Space to the Extreme?

Tell me about it! Just in the middle of reorganising my garage cum workshop cum malt and equipment and bottle store to make way for the kitchen fridge I've just replaced at the cost of an arm and a leg, but to The Wise One's great joy. Unwisely I dropped a great chunk of oak on my big toe. Lucky...

    Simpsons Imperial Malt

Had an order from MM of a 25 Kg sack crushed for £31.50. Of course, using a sackful takes a bit of forward planning. Edit: that was January this year.

    Levels of Difficulty

It;s an interesting question. My experience is that stouts are most forgiving and Pilsners the most difficult to get right. But that's not to say the AG brewing process is any more difficult unless you go for double or triple decoction, it's rather getting exactly the right ingredients and...
