Advice on cold steeping dark grains

Maybe so, I’ve never seen or looked for any references to inform that debate I’m afraid. For me at least, any extraction that might occur through cold-steeping is below my taste threshold - though to be honest I don’t remember picking up any astringency even when doing a full mash with dark...

Advice on cold steeping dark grains

Yes…probably… Astringency comes from the husks of the grain which you will already have removed if you’re only adding the steeped liquor. If what you’re trying to eliminate is bitterness from roasting you may see less improvement than you would like because your steeped liquor will go through...

Just been out for dinner, lovely steak a huge bottle of Keo and wine. Back at the brewery for NEIPA and Baileys (and the obligatory overpriced roses!).

    What are you drinking 2024.

We’re back at the hotel because my wife is a bit weary doing f-all all day 😂. Having a beer on the terrace overlooking the pool. Edit “My husband is a cheeky b4stard”. Mrs Hazelwood Brewery

Mash hopping, are you doing it? - Thiols, chelating metals, aroma, habit.....

There are Thiol precursors in both malt and hops so if you do find transferring the trub into your fermenter helps it might just be because you’ve brought more of the raw materials to the table? In my mind though mash hopping is more about reducing the level of dissolved oxygen in your finished...

    What are you drinking 2024.

We started tonight at an English pub we haven’t tried before. A little bit run down but the food was OK. I started with a Speckled Hen on tap and then a bottled Hobgoblin IPA. Now off to the brewery…

    What are you drinking 2024.

I’ve not seen one of these before, an Imperial Red IPA. It’s 9% and hopped using Sorachi Ace, Centennial, and Motueka. It tastes like my own DIPA but with toffee notes.

I’m having that porter and it’s quite fruity. I’d probably have said this was a Black IPA if the bottle didn’t say porter. Hops are Fuggles and Rakau.

We went to an Italian restaurant tonight and had wine with the meal. Back at the brewery having a Pale Ale and thinking about a porter next maybe.

I’m falling behind. Many Pornstars and NEIPA’s later (and a couple of overpriced roses from a street vendor) …

    What are you drinking 2024.

Started on Keo at a restaurant and now having a NEIPA at the brewery. They have a live group on tonight that we first heard on Tuesday - very good.

    What are you drinking 2024.

If you’re going Jester and Olicana, I’d go more pale, a little more dry, and a tad more carbonation. They really suit golden ale 😉.

    What are you drinking 2024.

I’m a bit slow on posting tonight because we met up with a Cypriot friend and had a few beers. We’ll met up with him again on the Turkish side in July. Also met another friend tonight we haven’t seen for about 5 years. A good day for old friends! This is what’s left of my last NEIPA 🤷‍♂️
