Add malt extract or short brew?

As obscure says above it's subjective based on relative tastes. You're over thinking it, probably wont make a huge difference in my experience of this kit. More important to have basics down - temp control, sanitation etc. It's easy to dry hop and makes a big difference, I'd start with that.

Add malt extract or short brew?

I've done this kit twice, in fact I am halfway through a barrel of a batch I made with .5kg light DME, 1kg dextrose and dry hopped with Chinook. First time I used all dextrose, can't say it made a huge difference. If anything the DME takes the edge of the pleasant dry bitterness which is one...

What are you drinking tonight 2021?

It's a dry golden ale along lines of Summer Lightening ( flattering the festival kit a little here ! ) Summer Lightning - Hopback Brewery but hopped with Cascade/Crystal rather than Fuggles and elderflower addition for citrusy, floral aroma.

    Tanglefoot's brewdays

Yesterday I brewed my second AG batch with the over half of the Maris Otter. This time I used Cascade. Other than that it's the same recipe although 11 L this time for a slightly lower ABV. Last time volume was slightly short so I rounded up Brewfather's 15.49 L to 16 L. American Pale 5.5% 11...

    Mangrove Jacks American IPA review

I did the MJ American IPA recently brewing it with their own 1.2 kg pure LME sachet and was also a bit disappointed, as you say very malt forward in flavour. I saw on another thread Drunkula tried it with DME for comparison and it turned out better balanced. Certainly the one I made was pleasant...

    What did you brew today?

Have high hopes for my first all grain brew, an American IPA made with Citra only kindly supplied by Fury tea - also smelt fantastic 👍

What are you drinking tonight 2021?

Malt miller American IPA, my first partial mash brew. Dry hopped with Simcoe,Mosaic and Citra, I only barreled this on monday but tastes and looks fantastic. Leaves me with high hopes for a similar all grain batch in the brewfridge at the moment !

Yes, there is a BIAB no sparge option in equipment settings.

    Brew father

Recently used the Brewfather recipe maker to plan and brew my first all grain batch, an American IPA. It made it easier to understand the process, I really like the style feature which lets you tweak amounts/timings to hit ideal ABV, IBUs,colour, etc. It makes the whole thing less hit and miss...

    BIAB, Grainfather or Robobrew

It's a stand alone 2kw hob, limited settings 60 - 240c, warm and boil. Yes, it was a Klarstein Mundschenk, like the Maishfest but with pump from Hi Fi Tower. Had it on order for about 3 weeks, rang to ask if they had any idea when it would be shipped and they suggested cancelling and...

    BIAB, Grainfather or Robobrew

I've just started doing BIAB in a stainless steel pot on an induction hob. Originally I ordered an all in one but I cancelled it as there was no sign of it being shipped from Germany any time soon. So far I've done a 21L partial mash and a 10L all grain batch, I enjoyed the simplicity of BIAB...

    Tanglefoot's brewdays

Yesterday I barreled the partial mash American Pale, it finished a little high at 1.012 but the OG was a point above predicted so attenuation was respectable with ABV a shade under 5%. Sample tasted fantastic ! With the fridge now free I got on with my first attempt at all grain BIAB no sparge...

    What's ya cost saver?

Recently have done my first partial mash BIAB and just got my Malt Miller order for an all grain brew. Looking forward to using unprocessed ingredients, no more rinsing the last of the LME out of a tin,no more bags of dextrose. Less waste, better taste - a couple of good reasons to drop kits...

What are you drinking tonight 2021?

On my last dozen of bottles of European pilsener ( kit cold fermented with lager yeast and Saaz dry hop ) which I brewed in November. Probably the longest I've managed to condition anything yet ! ( and all the better for it )

    Beer kit recommendations

You can't go too far wrong with either the Youngs or Festival premium kits, though if your first brew was horrible it might be something you need to fix with your method rather than the kit - controlling temperature, sanitizing etc.

What are you drinking tonight 2021?

Very palatable French lager from Asda, usually grab a few on our online shop when I see them. Cheap and cheerful but punchy 5.5% with nice bready malt, more bitter than sweet if a little thin.

moving on to first all grain recipe - any feedback please

Thanks, that's pretty much what I've been doing, also adjusting hop amounts to see affect on IBU's. Just started trying out the BF recipe maker, the style profile is useful too. Not overly worried about abv, thought I could calculate the actual efficiency after this brew then adjust accordingly.
