    I'm going all electric ... but .....

I’ve never had a problem with the filter clogging but I find when using over 150g hops in the boil it can take ages to pump out and often I had to scrape the top of the filter during pump out. I tried the false Bottom but every brew tripped the element safety switch so I opted for the large...

    I'm going all electric ... but .....

I have a grainfather G30. I use corny kegs rather than bottles so it’s very useful with 30L systems to be able to brew just enough to fill a keg each time. If you ignore the cost I think most would recommend the grainfather for overall features, decent build quality, excellent chiller, great...

Switching from dry yeast to liquid yeast

You can get Belgian golden ale dry yeast and it does add flavour.

Switching from dry yeast to liquid yeast

I mainly make Double IPA's, APA's and the occasional English Ale, I switched to liquid and then back to dry. The reason I went back to dry is due to no real improvement in taste with the exception of English ales where the liquid choice is far more and genuinely tasted better. With Double IPA's...

    How to make Turbo Cider.

Depends on which yeast but mine reach 1.000 (or very near) within a week, if yours is at 1.002 after 3 weeks it will be done and you can bottle.

    How to make Turbo Cider.

Hi, I've just started fermenting a TC. This time I didn't use concentrate, I used 100% pressed juice. Bubbling away nicely. Question is - has anyone tried using pressed juice rather than concentrate ? is their any difference ? it was much more expensive !!

    How to make Turbo Cider.

He says 5.35% but I don’t think it would be if you add 5 litres of water, it would be less. Last TC I made I used a hydrometer to check the gravity of the juice, it was 1.044, with cider yeast it will finish fermenting at around 1.000 which gives an ABV of 5.7%. I would use 25 litres of juice...

    How to make Turbo Cider.

I’ve made a couple of TC’s using concentrate, I bumped up the OG with dextrose to reach approximately 7.5% ABV. However both were quite watery to taste which I guess is a consequence of using concentrate which will have had water added, is there a way to add more body? I was going to try adding...

    RO success FYI

Since my local tesco has stopped selling Ashbeck I made my 1st brew with RO water purchased from a local aquatics centre. I used brewersfriend basic salt calculator to treat mash and sparge water. I have to say on my first pour tonite and it could be the best beer i've made. Quite suprised...

    Berries in turbo

I was expecting it to be dry at 1.000 and it really was very dry !! far too dry for me, I prefer a medium dry. I poured 250ml into a glass and added 1/2 tea spoon of splenda, it tasted about right so I added the rest at a quantity of 2 teaspoons per litre, then added priming sugar, stirred and...

    Berries in turbo

I usually use ale yeast for all-grain beer, US05 etc and find it typically finishes around 1.010, for my cider I used Mangrove Jacks Cider Yeast which is meant to finish at 1.000 which mine did, after just 7 days.

    Berries in turbo

This maybe useful - I made my 1st turbo cider last weekend, I wanted something around 7.5%, the apple juice was somewhere near1.046 original gravity tested with my hydrometer, using brewersfriend ABV calculator, assuming final gravity will be 1.000, I would need a 1.060 starting gravity...

    Best method to clear beer

Gelatin works incredibly well, as clear as commercial beer, but I suspect it's dropping flavour too so I stopped using it, after a few pints my Ales pour quite clear from my kegs.

    How to make Turbo Cider.

I made my 1st turbo cider last weekend, I have bought some Splenda to back-sweeten, anyone have a rough guide as to how much of it to add to 20 litres to make medium-dry cider ?

    Grainfather pump or controller faulty

Hi, thanks but I removed the coil spring and ball shortly after buying the GF so it can’t be that. Could you have a look to see if your connect controller has a pump on/off display on the screen ? I’m sure mine used to have it but not now, I hope I’m not just dreaming ! Thanks

    Grainfather pump or controller faulty

Today’s brewday nearly turned to a disaster. When I switched the pump on to cool the wort and transfer to the fermenter via the CFC the pump didn’t work. I could hear a faint buzzing sound but the pump was not vibrating. I unplugged and tried several times but no luck. Eventually the pump did...

    Dry Hopping

You will find a whole lot of opinions on when, how, what temperature, how long etc there’s no exact answer but I think the most common technique is to put them in for the last 3 - 4 days of fermentation, when the fermentation process would’ve completed.

    Verdant Putty

Funny isn’t it, I had my first putty this weekend. Not much change from £10, I have to say I’m fed up with hazy hoppy NEIPAs but putty was probably the best NEIPA I’ve had, has a citrus effervescence that was really good. I have a Hoppin Frog Goose Juice clone in the keg, much more a west coast...

    Corny Keg

The long dip tube should be connected to the out, use a grey connector on the gas in and a black connector on the beer out line. Although some people swap the grey and black connectors, using a black connector down the out side as to push the CO2 up through the beer rather than at the top. I...
