    home built RIMS system overview

Hi All, I built this 10 gallon system towards the end of last year and have now used it twice. It is half home built. I bought a mash tun from Angel Homebrew and then built the rest myself. The link below should go to a google doc that I wrote covering the bits I used and the general layout...

Cleaners and Sanitisers (Dilution Rates and Uses Guide)

I'm the same as @Chippy_Tea. Milton or Tesco equivalent. One tablet for a 5l/ a demijohn, and can reuse the solution for quite a few times over several days. Works really well, and no nasty corrosive chemicals involved, and doesn't need excessive rinsing compared to a lot of stuff (I do tend...

    Hop & Grape in Darlington

It is indeed closed, which is a big shame for me, as I have used them for years (clearly not buying enough though!). For my last brew, I tried the next nearest shop to me in the Northeast that sells grain. It is called Homebrew life, http://www.homebrewlife.co.uk/ in Felling near Gateshead...

A new mash tun required, upgrade options

That is good to know, I was veering away from the double skin as I thought it would be even harder to cut. I've only made one SS so far: an FV with tap for my Dad. I've bought my other two pre-made (boiler and FV). Think I'll price it up with the couple of EU sites that have been suggested...

    How do you sparge?

I've only done batch sparging a couple of times. To my mind, you are more likely to end up getting it stuck, and also far less likely to get it to run clear. Running off 2-3 jugfuls of the initial mash and reintroducing at the top once it has run clear, whilst draining into the boiler lets the...

    How do you sparge?

A standard burco tap can be adapted: I have a muckle bit of polypropylene tubing attached onto the end of the burco outlet and then a redcucer that goes onto a standard syphon tube, which I then hold and manually spray over the mash.

A new mash tun required, upgrade options

Actually, just seen this 40 litre one on PowellBrewing (I'd only looked at the 50 litre before): https://powellbrewing.co.uk/product/40ltr-stainless-steel-thermopot-with-fase-bottom-and-temprature-gauge/ Looks really nice and a very good price in my opinion. If i got a tap added at the top too...

A new mash tun required, upgrade options

Thanks all for your help and advice. @Clint yes, I saw Powell brewing too, and was impressed with their website. Any experience of using them? I thought their Thermos pot looked rather nice (if at the top end of costs!). @simon12 and @Fil I am thinking to only use the heating when doing step...

A new mash tun required, upgrade options

Hi All, My rather old ice box mash tun is finally dying, as the skin is cracking around the top. Time to build a new one. I am in the rather nice position of being richer than I was when I bought that about 17 years ago. I've been reading the nice thread on modding a buffalo boiler to make a...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Hi Magnus, My hop harvest does me for a year, kept in the freezer. I'm drinking my second last brew from last year, and it is still got plenty if bitterness and plenty floral notes. They seem to keep fine Luke that (should do really). That was last years harvest, my first year almost self...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

I freeze all mine fresh. I've tried drying them and have been pretty disappointed with the results. They seem to lose a lot of the oils. I think you need to use a fast drying technique for it to work. Only learning curve for using fresh was guessing the weight to use. Regarding the little...

Best of luck, TartanSpecial. I'll try and remember to post an update this autumn with how well my plants have done in their second year. Glyn

    Beer garden

Hi Tony, Prima Donna grows slowly- I didn't get any flowers from that plant in the first year. I'm hoping this year it'll be established and grow well. My other plant wasn't a dwarf variety (I think it's Fuggles or Cascade, I can't remember sitting in front of a computer) and grows much...

    Beer garden

Jonnyboy isn't right. I grew two hop plants last year and I live 250m above sea level in county durham. Considering they were only in for one year I still got hop cones from one plant, the other dwarf variety was still establishing itself. This year I'm planting another two and expect to get...

    Homebrewbuilder.co.uk still up and running?

Thanks everyone. Just got back from holidays, so will start again trying to contact him. Thanks Joker, I'd found PowellBrewing too, and had only edged towards homebrewbuilder because I'd decided to go for electric rather than gas. I'll try and get hold of both- always nice to keep options...

    Homebrewbuilder.co.uk still up and running?

Ahh, I hadn't found his ebay shop. That helps a lot, and gives a different email address too. I'll try asking again via that address. The phone number is the same, but since I only got to the answer machine, there's a good chance it never got heard. Thanks Serum!

    Homebrewbuilder.co.uk still up and running?

Hi, Does anyone know if http://www.homebrewbuilder.co.uk/ is still making boilers? I've tried phoning and leaving a message as well as emailing, but have had no reply. Other brewers on here have given good feedback for their products, and I'd pretty much decided on going for one of...
