    Appalling Efficiency!

What method of all grain brewing are you using? What equipment do you have? I use an AG BIAB system.

    Recommend me a boiler

I have just started brewing all grain using the BIAB method. I use a 37.7l pot and LPG fuelled burner. You could look at mini and maxi BIAB if you do not have the space.

    Biab

Hi Just completed my first all grain BIAB. I use a 37.5l pot. As people have stated in previous posts this is not big enough for a 23l FV volume using the true BIAB method, which is a drain out an no-sparge system. My way is to fill the pot to 30l, I raise the temperature to 70c, remove...

    Cooling wort with ice?

I use ice bath to cool my wort. I also add frozen Tesco spring water directly if my length is short. I would be interested in how many litres a wort chiller uses, I have a metered supply and often wonder what the cost would be.

    Position of temperature probe

Perhaps the second law. my wort has achieved entropy......bounded by the walls of my freezer..

    Position of temperature probe

Does Maxwell's third law of thermodynamics not come into play when you have a closed environment?

    which keg should i choose

Just stored a brew in one of these. Bought a job lot of stuff in an auction, keg, brewing bin, lid, hydrometer and container for a fiver. Refurbed the bin, new lid and tap. Had to tighten the bottom tap really hard to stop a weep, should have used PTFE tape, will next time. IMO the top lid...

Stuck brew advice - Coopers Selection IPA

I think your idea of using a sachet of non-kit yeast e.g. S04 or Nottingham, is a good idea for next time. The quantity of yeast supplied by the kit manufacturers is a bit light at 5 gms for 23 litres. Getting a good blast going early on usually helps the whole process. Have you checked the...

    May I ask why?

    Muntons Premium Gold

Agree with the perfect conditions comment. Also with the meagre amount of yeast Munton's supply, this would be hard to achieve. I would look for at least 15 to 20 days of fermentation, some of us move the brew into a fresh bin after 6 or 7 days. Worth testing the SG to ensure the reading is...

    Using clear bottles

I use clear bottles ex.spitfire (Bought them full for a £1 each at Sainsbury on offer) and Bishops Finger (Currently £1.25 at Lidl) and keep the sun off them as the previous poster.

    Position of temperature probe

Do you know how many degrees C are added by the exothermic reaction?

    Position of temperature probe

I have converted a chest freezer into a fermentation container using the usual controller (ATX-800) and have been fermenting two 5 gallon brews. Something I would appreciate opinion on, where best to position the temperature probe? I had it taped to one of my bins with the heater in...

    squidgy packet czech pilsner horrible

No it's not a bottom fermenting yeast...but it does taste like a lager...see the kit thread on the forum

    squidgy packet czech pilsner horrible

Better Brew appears to use a lager yeast that can operate at normal fermentation temperatures. They advise on the packet that using a low temp. will result in no noticeable gain in taste or quality. There is a big discussion on this lager on the beer kit review pages.

    BIAB Volumes

Thanks rodwha...I use Brewers Friend to calculate quantities. As long as I use a standard 23 l brew length in the calculations and the predicted quantities, then if I go under on the boil, topping up should give the calculated results. I understand that now, thanks again.

    BIAB Volumes

Hi all I am about to start both partial and full mash brewing. I have been reading various books and watching YouTube videos and one thing puzzles me. For an all grain BIAB 23 litre recipe why do you start with say 27 litres to achieve the final brew length? Why cannot you mash...

    Hi all advice please

A good lager to try is Better Brew Czech Pilsner, just stick to the instructions. Use brewing sugar as advised, normal brewing temperature (18c to 22c) ....excellent drink and not expensive.

    tinkering with canned kits

Hi Most kits are formulated to a fixed brew length recipe, so you idea is an interesting one. There is a calculator here http://www.brewersfriend.com giving the outcome of a recipe. Might be an idea to run the figures through this for your brew length. I would think you might have to...
