    Best commercial beer

I had a few of them over Christmas and enjoyed them. The ding-dong was merrilying along that night if I remember.

    India Pale Ale advice

As above, and... I brewed a John Bull IPA in the new year and gave it 3.5 weeks in the fermenter even though I had it at a constant 19-20C in a water bath. I had added a lot of fermentables though (details in my signature) and it turned out that I'd brewed it slightly short at around 21.1L (I'd...

Marston's Pedigree New World Pale Ale for 95p in Morrisons? Go on then, twist my arm... Made with Australian hops including Galaxy & Topaz according to the website. Crisp and tasty - very nice it is too. I give it a "damn right I will" out of 10. :hat:

Twin-lever cappers and different bottle types.

Wing nuts FTW! I wonder why modern cappers aren't adjustable. Mind you, as long as they can handle the deep collar bottles (type 3) then you can always compensate for shallow collars (type 2) by stacking three 1p coins on the cap so it's not really a problem.

First time bottling - do I need to sterilize new bottles?

Check the documentation but if the Brew Safe no rinse sanitiser provided with your bottling kit is anything like the Starsan no rinse sanitiser that I use, by the time you put the last bottle on the tree to drain, the first bottle will be ready to use.

First time bottling - do I need to sterilize new bottles?

Personally I wouldn't assume that new bottles are clean so I'd sanitise them, what is there to lose?

    Best commercial beer

To further my understanding of American hops I've just knocked the top off a bottle of Marston's Revisionist Rye Pale Ale (Tesco), all in the name of research of course. "Dry hopped with Citra and Amarillo" apparently and very nice it is too. I give it a firm "yes please barman" out...

Improving a kit - hop schedule.

Cheers Slid. Where do you get your DME from? I'd like to use some but it seems quite expensive (especially the Coopers branded stuff). Buying some grain and mini-mashing looks to be considerably cheaper or am I missing something?

    Hydrometer Reading.

Did you give it a really good stir after topping up the FV with water? I had an artificially low reading recently because I didn't do this properly. The beer turned out fine though.

If it tastes half as good as it looks then I'd be very happy with that. I'm sure he's played for Wales too. Speaking of fathers, I remember mine was always reluctant to right-off the Scottish side regardless how far behind they were. "You've got to watch 'em - like wounded animals they are". :D

That makes sense so I'll stick to my original plan and see how it goes. Cheers.

Indeed. Sorry about that Chief. :thumb:

Improving a kit - hop schedule.

I notice you used roughly 3x more hops than I'm planning to. I don't want an overly-hoppy beer but I wonder if 30g is a bit on the low side. How hoppy did yours turn out?

    Oops wrong thread.

Anyone done this kit with hop additions before? If so, what did you do? How did the beer turn out?

    The Gaming thread.

Well, my Robocraft robot has now shed its wheels in favour of hoverblades. It also has 6 top & bottom mounted T5 SMG's (guns), arranged so that all 6 each have almost full 360 degree coverage for maximum whooparse. Since the redesign it's been kicking major buttocks. :)

Great, that's handy. I was originally going to do just one boil but then had utilisation worries so went with "better safe than sorry" and doubled-up. Cheers.

Improving a kit - hop schedule.

Thanks Mark. The hops are whole but compressed into 100g "sheets". They're like thick, rough sheets of papermache, if you see what I mean. Do you think it'll work with a cafetiere if I cut the hop-sheet up quite small? What do you think of hopping in 2 stages - worth doing?
