    Floating dip tube connection

I think I’ve solved this problem now. I use an 8mm to 8mm John Guest straight coupler. One of the ends fits directly onto the outlet tube, once it’s fitted to the keg ( the John Guest fitting is easy to fit and remove, even with limited access). I then used a short length of rigid pvc tube, 6mm...

    Floating dip tube connection

Thanks. Having got the tube on, it’s so tight I can’t get it off again! I’ve just measured the silicone tube they supplied and it’s 6mm I/D, whereas the metal pipe is 8mm O/D. Maybe if I buy some 8mm I/D silicone tube it will make things a lot easier.

    Floating dip tube connection

I bought two floating dip tube devices, as I’m finding my beer is a bit cloudy from the keg. The trouble is, it’s very difficult to fit the silicone hose over the outlet tube inside the keg, as the fit is very tight. Even fitting the hose whilst the outlet tube is not in the keg is very...

    Best method to clear beer

Thanks for your suggestions. How long is it before you transfer to a secondary FV? I usually ferment for 14 days. At what stage do you reduce the temperature to 4 degrees? Do you then condition at a higher temperature for a period of time before reducing to serving temperature?

    Best method to clear beer

I moved from bottles to corny kegs a few months ago, and I’ve noticed the beer clarity is worse in kegs than it was in bottles. So I wondered what routine my fellow all-grain brewers use to arrive at clear beer? All I do at present is throw in a Protofloc tablet 15 minutes before the end of...

    Grainfather pump or controller faulty

The Connect controller should show a green illuminated ring around the pump button, when switched on. If yours doesn’t do that, it could be there’s no power getting to the pump.

    Grainfather pump or controller faulty

If you could hear a noise when switching on the pump, it’s likely that the pump is just blocked. My Grainfather often does this too. It accumulates hop debris in the coil spring in the isolation valve. I find it necessary to remove the spring after every brew to clean out the crud. If this...

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help. I always put half a crushed Camden tablet in to the combined mash and sparge water the night before brew day. I then set the timer to heat it to mash temperature, ready for next day. I pump out the sparge water into a hot liquor pan, and then heat it...

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

Thanks Kev. I had exactly the same problem with the spring, a few brews ago. Imake don't mention it in the cleaning procedure. I now know to dismantle it after every brew. It caused a horrible antiseptic taste and made the beer undrinkable. This time, the beer's not completely undrinkable, but...

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

I must admit that I never worried too much about absolute cleanliness of my Grainfather because I believed that the boiling wort would kill any bugs (I do circulate the wort through the chiller to sterilise it before cooling it). However, my daughter trained as a Microbioligist and she says that...

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

Just had a thought that it might be my hop spider. It's very difficult to get the crud out of seam between the sides and the base. Sure enough, on close inspection there's a lot of muck in there. Even if you manage to dislodge it with a brush, it generally gets stuck elsewhere in the mesh. Think...

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

Thanks guys, I always clean with PBW after each brew, as per the manacturer's instructions. I think, maybe, I'll have to pay more attention to cleaning the inside of the vessel. The cleaning cycle flushes the pump and the chiller, but it doesn't really clean the sidewalls very well.

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

Cheers guys. I took your advice Soton, and took my Grainfather out into the sunshine to have a proper look. There are indeed a few bits trapped in the seam. I cleaned it with a brush and some diluted bleach. I also noticed a film dried on to some areas of the side walls, so I gave them a good...

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

Yes, I've spent this morning pumping Starsan through the whole kit, as recommended by David Heath on his YouTube channel. What I might do is go back to extract brewing for the next brew, and if that turns out OK, it proves the problem is related to the Grainfather. Thanks for your reply.

    Off flavoured Grainfather brews

The last two brews I've done on my Grainfather have an off flavour, and I don't know why. The first was Brew UK's Hopback Summer Lightning clone. It had none of the fruity hop flavour that I like, just an odd aftertaste. The second brew, which has just finished conditioning, is similar. It's a...

    Quality disconnects

Got a German made disconnect from the Malt Miller, and guess what?- no flippin' difference! So I thought it must the corny keg post that's causing the problem. I swapped the 'gas in' post for the 'beer out' post and it works fine. Actually, I don't use the 'gas in ' post, because I fitted...

Where can I get rice hulls?

Cheers guys, I hadn't realised oat hulls did the same job. I'll get some on order.

Where can I get rice hulls?

The sack of malt I'm using at the moment seems to give me stuck mashes every time, and I watched a video that suggested using a small quantity of rice hulls in the mash to prevent it from happening. The problem is, I can't find any online shop that has any in stock, currently. Does anyone know...

    Quality disconnects

I'm pretty sure I bought the last one from one of the major on line brewing suppliers, but it seems to be exactly the same moulding as the eBay sourced one I already had. My local home brew store doesn't sell disconnects, so if anyone knows of a disconnect available on line that is definitely...
