    Growing Hops

thanks guys. Yeah I was planning on keeping them in the pots, partly to limit their growth & partly to keep their roots warmer. I started them in a sunny spot in my garage, before planting them out, which might be why they have shot up. The nugget is halfway up the string already.

    Calculating alcohol?

that is really useful, many thanks. The fruit I wanted to use wasn't in the table, but searching for the 'Foods and Nutrition Encyclopedia' I found it. Many thanks again

    Excited beer....

sounds like over carbonation - you could try putting it in the fridge for a bit before opening, that might calm it down a bit

    Calculating alcohol?

yoikes! ok, back to guestimating then. [my brewing issue: I want to put fruit in the FV, which will affect the ABV, but I'm not sure how to factor that into hydrometer readings. Any advice on that would be appreciated!]

    Calculating alcohol?

Hi all, does anyone know if you can buy something that measures alcohol content in beer (ABV ideally)? i.e. not the gravity, but the alcohol? ta!

    Hot Break

I didn't look out for the hot break when I brewed with extract, but for AG it starts to form at about 90 degrees. I start scooping it out when I see it form, so by the time I get to 100 degrees, and first hop addition, I have generally skimmed all of it off.

    Nelson sauvin!!!

I agree that it's the Chinook, Simcoe and Amarillo that are the more important hops, especially the Simcoe (which is pretty dominant, I think)

    cloudy ipa

yeah, the cloudiness could be due to dryhopping or it could be a chill haze when you get when you cool the beer. If it goes away when the beer warms up, that solves it; if not, it might be dryhop or other stuff.

    Yeast....... sprinkle or stir?

it depends on the yeast. Some need to be rehydrated first - if there are no specific instructions on the pack, sprinkling it on top is best (I find)

Would you still homebrew if you lived in Germany @ 60p a litre

yeah, I don't really do it for cost reasons. I like the process of brewing almost as much as the drinking.

    Dry Hopping a Lager ?

I think it's a good idea to dry hop. I haven't done this with a lager myself (not fermented a lager; seems like too much work!) But there are commercial lagers that dry hop - there's one brewed by Adnams for example, that's a really great pint. So go for it I say - and Saaz or another German...

    Building regs, planning and insurance

Hi, no I am pretty sure you don't have to declare/change anything as long as you're brewing for personal consumption. If you're brewing to sell then you'll need to register

Attempting BIAB what do you think?

Nope, all looks good to me! Hope it turns out well - let us know

where to get a bag to use for BiAB

I use this one, which works pretty well: http://www.art-of-brewing.co.uk/acatalog/MASHING---SPARGING-BAG-for-32---25-litre-bins-1923.html#SID=16 but this site has a few cheaper options, also in smaller sizes...
