    What did you brew today?

So, ended up with OG at about 1.042 so more or less bang on - re-beginner's luck! Length was a bit short at about 18L and the yeast went in at 19, but otherwise felt good. Also much quicker to clean up in the new shed next to the compost heap!! Let's see what happens in a couple of...

    Too much head....

I suspect you're right Linalmeemow. The brew was this one:http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=60477 I kegged, 5L mini keg, 1 teaspoon of corn sugar to prime. It's been in the keg for a year!

    Too much head....

Why does my beer always give a massive creamy head? It settles after about five minutes, but only a third of the glass is beer!

    Last year's beer - drinkable?

It's just gone down the sink!! :-(

    Last year's beer - drinkable?

So, its clear, but really gassy, and tastes like TCP! I used Milton fluid to sterilise the mini kegs - could that be causing it? Not sure if that's a chlorine based disinfectant??

I'm going to try one later.....I'll report back!

    Grainfather / hop spider

Hi Sorry, I'm sure this question has been asked before but couldn't find a thread. What are people's thoughts on using a hop spider with the Grainfather. Does it make clean-up much easier? I hate cleaning.....

    Last year's beer - drinkable?

So, I tend to brew most in the spring when I often find weekends are free of kids' sport, but not nice enough to do much else! I have three mini kegs of home-brew from last April. Do you reckon they'd still be drinkable? They've been stored in a cool cupboard, airtight in the keg. How...

Party Star Deluxe tap - Dumb Question

Have you managed to sort out your issues with the CO2 bulb? The first one I put in nearly shot the holder right back out! Then the second one fully discharged into the keg so my beer was coming out like cream! Struggling to work out how to use it tbh, but need to make the keg work given how...

    Second Grainfather brew

FG 1.012, so pretty much spot on. Planning a cold crash and bottling any day. Tastes great, quite like Punk so hopefully clears and carbonates well!

    Citrus IPA

What better way to recover from a 100km bike ride than a brew session?! Just waiting for the boil to finish; efficiency calculated at 71%, so the GF seems to be remarkably consistent! Would prefer it to be a bit higher, but happy enough. Just about to get the chiller going now, and start...

Grainfather getting clogged on false bottom

I have similar problems recirculating, but not in the sparge. I've stirred the grains about five minutes before the end of the mash which helps. The mash water ratio means the porridge is really thick. I tried closing the valve, but I had to reduce it to a trickle, so settled for the...

    Citrus IPA

The Simcoe I'm using has a 13.8% alpha, so I'm hoping it will bitter OK. I know it's mostly used later on, but I'll give it a go and see what happens. That's why I love brewing so much - if it doesn't work, I still probably get a drinkable beer, and next time I can do something else...

    Citrus IPA

So, sneaking in another Grainfather brewery tomorrow before I go back to work... 5Kg Maris Otter (4.5 EBC) 0.5Kg Caramalt (39 EBC) 60 mins mash at 66C; sparge at 75C, with water per GF calcs. 30g Simcoe, 60 mins 30g Citra, 20 mins 0.5 Protofloc 15 mins 30g Citra, 7 mins Pitching...

    Second Grainfather brew

So, just dry hopped with a crazy amount of hops. Only just thought through the fact that I should have had something to weight the hop bag down, so it's floating at the moment! Will add a few of the kids marbles tomorrow. Smells good!

    Second Grainfather brew

Thanks - makes me feel a bit less clueless. Temperature must have been the issue!! I just pitched the yeast and it's bubbling away today, so looks ok. Only checked after 24 hours, but looks like a quick start. A bit late for me to buy a BM now - don't think Mrs G would go for...

    First Grainfather brew

Yes, you don't have to wait until the whole lot is cool. You run it through the chiller until the wort out is at the right temperature (which takes around a minute) then can pump straight into the FV. I even have to turn down the wort flow as my outdoor water supply is really cold at this time...

    Second Grainfather brew

Thanks. I thought the crush looked finer than I'd seen before, but the sparge was fine. I gave it a good mix before starting, which helped.
