Thanks Oldbloke. Based on that comment I feel inclined to keep them seperate for this upcoming batch. If I'm making 3+ gallons, I'd like to know its a reliable recipe.

Can happen to us all, and there's no set period although 4-5 days is probably safe. My latest wow, a 6 gallon batch, had been fermenting for over a week when I topped up to the cap of the FV, only to come back a day later to see it had overflowed!
