    Second Grainfather brew

Yes I have the updated version. I also noticed problems with the ball bearing valve getting stuck/sticky with gunk and reducing flow. My brewhouse efficiency is pretty low so I will try and remove the valve and see what happens. Cheers.

    Second Grainfather brew

I tasted a bottle of this yesterday after 1 week. It is not fully carbed up yet but it tastes great. Better than the semimash version I did before (which was pretty good). If this improves it will be really fantastic.

Beersmith - Which is the best beer recipe program/designer thingy?

I use beersmith and have the app on my tablet. I can design a recipe on my pc and take the tablet into the kitchen with the recipe in the cloud for reference during brewing or look at my recipes wherever I am.

    Second Grainfather brew

It took over 24 hours to get going, but finished fairly quickly. I fermented at about 18C. The OG was higher than expected at 1.059. I took another reading today and it has stopped at 1.018 - a bit high. It is also paler than the semi mash version I did and tastes a bit sweeter and stronger. It...

Started brew number 2 - Razorback IPA

After 10 or so weeks since it went into the fermenter this has turned out very nicely. The banana hint has died down a lot. I may do this one again. Very refreshing.

Thanks I will check these out.

3 months in and some more questions...

I have dry hopped a couple of times, but not every time. The only thing that is consistent as far as I can tell throughout the brews is the tap water.

I get haze with kits, extract, partial mash, all grain. You name it.

3 months in and some more questions...

I am now 3 months in to home brewing and have been pretty happy so far with my efforts. One thing that seems to happen consistently to my beer is chill haze. Every batch I have brewed has this issue. The beer is crystal clear at room temperature, but put it in the fridge and it goes cloudy...

    Second Grainfather brew

I did my second AG Grainfather brew. A recipe based on clibit's Amarillo Pale Ale. Went more smoothly than the first one.

    First partial mash

Thanks, Clibit. I actually did a full AG last weekend using a Grainfather. I am planning to do a repeat of this partial AG converted to full AG next weekend to compare. I don't think I will be bothering with many more kits. Here is the recipe:

    First partial mash

This has been in the bottle just over a week. I cracked one open to try and it tastes very good indeed. If it improves it will be fantastic. Much, much better than the 2 straight kits I tried. I don't think this one will last long once it is ready.

Started brew number 2 - Razorback IPA

It's been in the bottle just over a week. I cracked one open to test. It has a slight banana taste/smell which I assume means it was too warm during fermentation although I don't think it ever went above 24C. It is not undrinkable, but the taste is there. Hopefully it will die down as time goes by.

    First attempt with Grainfather

It took about 20 minutes or so to get the temperature down to 22C which was what was going into the FV.

    First attempt with Grainfather

Hi Mick I added a protafloc tablet 15 minutes before the end. This is what the wort looked like after the sparge: You can see bits settling at the bottom of the cylinder whereas the wort was really clear before sparging. This is what it looked like after the boil: Much...

    First attempt with Grainfather

Ended up with quite a cloudy wort into the fermenter. Not sure if I did something wrong. Walk through is here: http://sheffieldhomebrew.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/first-day-with-grainfather-all-grain.html

    First attempt with Grainfather

Doing my first all grain with the grainfather. All going well so far at the mash stage. I am doing the Beerworks Timothy Taylor Landlord Clone, but I don't think it is particularly accurate from what I can gather online.

Is temperature critical after the main fermentation

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago: http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=53757 The beer I produced with too high temperatures does taste a bit fruity, but it is not undrinkable and it has yet to settle down (it's been about 5 weeks since I started it and it has been in a...

Is temperature critical after the main fermentation

Thanks for the replies. Can you generally substitute a temperature tolerant yeast in an ale recipe or does this cause problems?
