    Cool box for mashing

You can certainly use a cool box as a mash tun very effectively - in fact most home brew stores sell cool boxes converted with a ball valve tap and a bazooka or false floor to separate the grain from the wort...

    Imperial brown ale AG

Yes I'm well aware now after doing some reading that the grain profile may have been a bit on the ambitious side re: crystal type malts... We live and learn. That said, I was aiming for something with a high abv but with some sweetness so in that respect maybe not too far off... You are right...

    Mother of all brew fridges

:shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock: Jealousy only just about starts to describe this... Manse for the win there I think!

    Imperial brown ale AG

So... the gravity hasn't dropped any further which is the bad news. When I took the last gravity reading though, the flavour has mellowed out a lot, which is the good news. However as I don't have the time to create a starter, I am ploughing on with the experimental side of this brew anyway...

Delay racking an extra week to dry hop?

...might be right there! in that case ignore me!

Delay racking an extra week to dry hop?

couple of points from me - have you tasted the brew after its been dry hopped rather than just smelling it? How does the taste compare to the smell? I believe dry hopping for too long can lead to some undesirables in your flavour profile - most notably grassy tastes. as already suggested I...

    Imperial brown ale AG

Been a few weeks since this was set up fermenting. After the first 2 days there was very little activity at all so I wasn't holding out much hope(despite repitching a second sachet of yeast to give it a boost). Took a hydro reading yesterday and we are down to 1025. By my reckoning then ABV...

    Swing top bottle offer

Wow that's pretty poor service... Not to rub the salt in or anything but I literally strolled into my local range and bought two boxes off the shelf... Might be worth checking out what they have in store if there is one close enough to you?

    Storing ingredients

Yeast goes in the fridge - even if its dried Hops, if opened I bung in the freezer, if not they are vacuum sealed in the foil packets so they live in the garage Grain - I recently placed a big order (around 25kg) of a variety of grains - some were milled and some weren't. while waiting for...

    OG at 1.018

I assume you have both chilled and pitched the yeast then? I have limited experience myself but if it were me I would probably let it do its thing and chalk it up to experience?

in that case you could add more DME to bring the sugar content up? Any particular reason you diluted down to 25L?

    OG at 1.018

would help if you gave more details of the kit etc. but I suspect you have two options: 1) Bin and start again as even if you do ferment down to 1004 you will only end up with 1.9% beer 2) Mix up a second batch but brew extremely short. split both batches and mix together - this way you would...

    Imperial brown ale AG

The brew I'm looking for is supposed to be thick dark and heavy on the flavour. I'll let you know how it turns out. With the second pitching of the yeast, is it fine to just chuck it it at any time? Should I wait for the first pitch to finish fermenting?

    Imperial brown ale AG

the inspiration for the recipe came from a very dark and very high abv beer that I have written about on here before. in reality it is closer to a stout in colour but much sweeter. so for me, the recipe hits all the right points there - 1100 og was a bit higher than expected though. as far...

    Imperial brown ale AG

Clibit - shock at method or results? Myqul - I split one packet between the two djs and fv, but figured if it needs itbincredible can pitch another half packet into the bucket? Just checked and there's a krausen on both djs, and the bucket is bubbling away so hopefully all going well.

    Imperial brown ale AG

So I managed to get my new brew pot fixed up and went for the first brew using new equipment! Really pleased with the new kit but that's a different thread. the recipe brewed is below, and the intention is to split a couple of smaller batches off to try some experimental stuff - bourbon soaked...

    BIAB - 32litre boiler query

Hi Spapro, I cant comment too much on your first two queries, but I would say if your boiler has a 32 litre capacity, you are at serious risk of boil overs if you boil 30 litres of wort in it vigorously. I would say max you should be boiling with is 26 litres to make sure you don't end up...

    John Bull traditional english ale

I have only ever dry hopped with pellets in my first AG attempt - an IPA I brewed up before joining this forum. it didn't turn out well in all honesty... should I just chuck in the leaf hops loose? or muslin bag them? Any tips on quantities to use for dry hops assuming I go with Amarillo?
