To get an ABV of 4.2 you would have needed to start with a OG of 1.050 ! if the OG was 1.040 your looking at 2.8% if you bottle at FG of 1.018 - Thats almost alcohol free ;-) Not sure about stirring up as it will create oxidation, however i might be wrong about that.

Its a good idea, Geterbrewed sell them separately or with their kits and you can buy them as a separate thing from Home Brew Store, so i'm guessing they must work. If your friend can make you one for nothing then go for it, it just needs to be a fine sieve that sits above the tap level keeping...

I like your thinking here Covribch, i'm on the verge of upgrading to a boiler and i think for the hassle i'll invest the little bit extra in the stainless steel false bottom and be done with it !

if you mashed for longer wouldn't the wort get stronger, or is there an optimum time to mash for before the grain and hops turn nasty ?

It simple - justify it this way: I spend circa £10 a week say on Beers i drink at home, so that works out to £520 a year, so if i spend say £150 setting up my beer manufacturing process i'll effectively save around £370 - so thats £370 she can go spend on shoe's or handbags or...

Could you make a teabag with the hops and thus avoid clogging the tap ? or invest in a false bottom for the boiler, which would prevent the clogging up !

never seen this either, its probably a bottling label mistake thats slipped through QC at the plant.

I went into the Lyme Regis micro brewery today and bought a few sample bottles of their beers to try (like you do) the bottles i bought have a thin layer of sediment in the bottom of them, and they brew a 1000 litres per batch, so i guess even at micro brewery level you'll suffer from sedimentation.

Please do post an update on how you get on with your kit, do's, don'ts and what you'd do differently etc as i'm seriously thinking about going down this route myself in the next few weeks or so.

MMMM - I'm liking your thinking here, buy the cheaper kit from HBC and then separately buy the false bottom for an extra £10, still saves you £25 overall ! Had another thought moving on from my previous post, you'd still want the cooler, so the kits seem like the cheaper way to go, and...

I've just been looking at Peco Boilers and found a web site where they say all you need is mesh bags to stop the hops touching the elements, though having priced up everything individually i'm of the opinion that the geterbrewed one if the better option, a digital thermometer costs circa £15...

But wouldn't the hop bags eventually sink and touch the heating element ? - I was thinking more on the line of a sheet of fine wire mesh, measure the circumference of the top of the Peco boiler then add a couple of extra inches to the overall circumference and cut out the bigger circle, then...

The only difference i can see between the two is the HBC one doesn't come with the false bottom, i'm assuming with the false bottom you don't need the tap filter, and therefore wouldn't need to change the tap they supply with the kit ? I wonder if for a little extra the HBC would supply the...
