    St Peters Cream Stout

Normally a Coopers stout person, but thought I would try a different one. Followed instructions with these additions. Added 100g ground coffee brewed with 2 L of very hot but not boiling water. Added 500g light spray malt Fermented @ 20L with S-04 yeast @ 18C for 14 days Bottle carbonated with...

    Chill Haze?

What causes a homebrew Pilsner kit to be chill hazed. It was fermented as per instructions, racked and dry hopped as per instructions Carbonated for 14 days @ the same fermentation temp, clear enough to read newspaper through it Placed in storage @ 8C for 1 month Decided to sample it last...

    Not enough yeast

I've just made up a St Peters Cream Stout kit + 500g of light spraymalt. The first thing I noticed was the kit yeast is only a 6g sachet. In my experience 6g is not enough yeast to ferment 20 litres of wort @ 1.052 properly. To make sure I didn't get a stuck fermentation I substituted it for a...

    Bitterness

If I boil 25g of hops with an AA of 10 in 5 litres of water for 60 minutes, would this be twice as bitter than if I had used 10 litres of water, or put another way, does a certain amount of hops boiled for 60 minutes half its bitterness every time you double the liquid content.

    Best Kit Beer

What's the best kit beer straight out of the can or pouch without having to make it better. Just need to make up a beer that most would enjoy for a party.

    Extract instead of all grain

As I normally make all grain and can make exactly the same wort and change it's character with different hops, I want to experiment making an extract brew instead. I have read that LME doesn't need to be boiled as it might lose some of the malty taste. 1. Can I boil the hops sepatately in just...

How much yeast should I pitch

I'm making some 10 litre AG brews so I have more varieties to try out before making larger batches. The Mr Malty calc states pitching just 6 grams into 10 litres @ 1.053, this leaves half a pkt to throw away as it might not be the strain I want for the next brew. Would it hurt to pitch a full...

    Spraymalt Taste

Has anyone noticed a taste difference between Light and dark spraymalt. I would assume light DME is produced from something like Maris Otter, and dark from darker roasted barley. If I make an AG wort with either, they taste different, but am I wrong to presume DME would taste different as...

    My Grainfather Mods.

I have made 2 mods to my GF, the first addition is the ALVA controller. The second was to make a filter for the overflow tube, the metal is purely to add weight, views are before and after. Apart from these I found no problems. .

Price of Graihfather will soon go up

I had an email from Grainfather which stated that the controller will soon be upgraded to one which will be fully programable. The price of the new Grainfather will go up to cover the cost of the new controller only. Those that already have a Grainfather will be able to buy the upgraded...

    mini keg starter kits

Thinking of buying a mini keg starter kit, but know nothing about them. 1. After priming can beer be kept the same length of time as in bottles. 2. Once the first pint is drawn off, how long will the remainder be good for.

Still fermenting at a low temp

I did a Blonde recipe brew in my Grainfather 3 weeks ago and it was at a constant 26C in my fermenter cabinet. When I checked it 4 days ago, there was no movement in the bubbler and I had a SG of 1.014, which when calculated gave me 6.8% ABV. So I racked it off the sediment and cold break into...

    Offline Refractometer Calculator (MS Excel)

I don't know if anyone else has done this, so I'll post anyway. I took all the equations from the online Fractometer calculators and compiled a MicroSoft Excel template so it can be done offline. Link to download file...
