Potton Brewing Co. New Brewery, eventually...

My ventures in homebrew were always intended as a potential launch pad to a change in career. And after doing it for 18 months, reading everything I can get my hands on, visiting a few breweries and talking to many more I'm taking the plunge. Yes, I know there's far too many breweries...

    Pico boiler dies.

Afternoon all, It has rather been a while since I've posted. Not that I haven't been brewing, I've just been rather busy setting up a 2.5BBl brewery in my town. Exciting times.... Anyway, After my homemade boiler melted itself last autumn, I bought myself a Pico boiler and have been using...

    New brewery. Thoughts and ideas.....

Morning all. I originally posted this thread on another forum which looks to be more "commercial" based. But looking at the general view and post figures, there doesn't seem to be anywhere near the volume of traffic we get here. Anyway..... I've been working in Central London for far...

    slightly mouldy krausen.

Morning all. I made a 20L robust porter the other week, bottled half of it and racked the rest over about a kg of blackberries. I'd picked them wild, washed them and then froze them until I was ready to use them. When I defrosted them I didn't boil them. Which I've found may have been a...

    BIAB batch No.12 Blackberry porter

This is my 3rd BIAB batch and my 12th grain recipe. I'm slowly getting the hang of the BIAB setup and it's really good. Thanks to a new copy of "how to design great beers" I have been able to really design this batch properly and work out my efficiencies and things like tweaking OG for...

    Wild hops. When to harvest?

The landlord of my local, (who I've had a long running discussion about commercial brewing with) has discovered a local source of wild hops. I walked into the pub this evening to a whole crop. I've no idea what they are, but they have a wonderfully citrus smell. And 1.5kg should make...

    weissbeer in a barrel?

I've done a few weissbeers over the summer with various combinations of yeast and malt, all being absolute stormers (if I may say so). I'd like to barrel one for my 40th birthday party in October but I'm worried about the sediment, or lack of it. When I've been drinking my bottled ones...

    AG batch No.8 German Weiss

    AG No. 7 Belgian Saison

This is the first of three 20L barrel batches I'm doing for my 40th in October. Only having the capacity for a 15L brew, I'm doing them as sort of partials, making up the rest of the volume and then bumping the gravity back up with DME. so this one.... is based on a leffe recipe I found...

    Wyeast 3724 Belgian Saison. Starter?

So this coming Tuesday I'll be doing a 20L Belgian ale using the Belgian saison yeast from Wyeast. The question is, would it benefit from a starter, and if so, how big? I've got a stir plate and 3L conical flask.

    first attempt at labels.

After playing around with a few ideas... They're just printed on some nice grey paper we had at work and stuck on with milk. they seem to stay on well, even in the fridge.

AG No 5 & 6. Belgian wit and raspberry version.

This is a recap of my last brew, which I acttually did last month but have been way too busy at work to write up. The idea was to do a 15L belgian wit, bottle half of it and then secondary the rest with some raspberries. 15L batch 1.76kg Bohemian pils 1.09kg munich base 1.6kg wheat...

Pilsner bottle conditioning time. How long?

My first AG lager (or any lager for that matter), a Bohemian pils, has been in secondary for a month now at 2°c. I'm planning on taking some of it to a friend's party at the end of June. Ideally, I'd like to condition it for as long as possible, so the question is, how long will it need in...

    AG No.3 Bohemian Pils

Today is brew day for my Get er brewed Bohemian Pilsner kit. They annoyingly don't say what any of the amounts of the ingredients are, which seems kind of fundamental.... It's a lovely day so I thought I'd spare the kitchen and brew in the garden. This is the debut for my new mash tun...

Get 'er Brewed Bohemian Pilsner kit

I've been planning a Bohemian Pilsner as my first full on AG, now that I'be got a proper mash tun and can sparge and the like. I came up with a recipe and was all set to buy all the ingredients using GEBs fancy recipe builder. But then I saw that they do pre-assembled kits, one of which was a...

    Bottled water containers as FVs?

I'm using a few of the ASDA Eden Falls bottles for the water in my Bohemian Pilsner and was wondering about reusing the 5L bottles as secondary fermentors for lagering. Does anyone know if these water bottles are PET or another plastic which is suitable for storing beer for a couple of months?

    Step mash water additions calculator

I'm using a cooler, but want to be able to perform step mashes for things like wheat beers. Obviously the plastic cooler rules out heating via the vessel, and it'll be a while until I get around to RIMS?HERMS or similar. My current solution is to follow the method whereby you add volumes of...

    Stepped mash recipe instructions

I've been mulling over stepped mashes, partly as it gives me an excuse to (eventually)build my idea of a pump, ITC310 and hot water powered heat exchanger. But also as I'm a massive fan of wheat beers which apparently benefit from a stepped mash due to the wheat content. Anyway, I've been...
