    Blending SMaSHs

Hi, My all grain brews started out as "clones" of existing beers (from the Graham Palmer book), diversified by tweaking those recipes, and I now brew some recipes of my own invention. In all this I've never made a SMaSH! So I'm now thinking of correcting that (with Aurora hops and Maris Otter to...

    St Austell Brewery "Proper Job"

How to make a keg level indicator

Well I tried the replacement floats the manufacturer sent, and its been a great success! The magnet seems much stronger - strong enough to hold the float in place with the other (supplied) magnet on the outside, with the float suspended at the top of the keg whilst you fill it, the external...

How to make a keg level indicator

Having seen this thread the manufacturers have suggested sending me replacements as they had a batch with malpositioned magnets in the ball float, which caused these sort of problems. I'll report back when I have a chance to try them. I have a brew fermenting currently so hopefully I'll get them...

How to make a keg level indicator

I got them, but found that if a float lost contact with the magnet outside when a keg was moved (which happened every time), I was unable to "recapture" the float to make the system work. Maybe it would work with a bigger/stronger magnet.

    Grainfather Sparge Water Heater

I looked at them when I bought my grainfather, but they seemed little different from any other boiler. I bought a Burco Cygnet 30L Manual Fill Water Boiler CYMFCT1030, from PlumbNation for £72, it works well - you just need to find out what number on the dial corresponds to the temperature...

Sunday trading hours, should shops open for longer? [Poll]

Overall opening more time is unlikely to mean we all spend more (except possibly initially), however the shops that can open longer will take a bigger share of the overall take. Staffing will be increased though, and therefore so will costs (unless wages per hour fall). Big companies who can...

    Proper Job high FG

I brewed a "Proper Job" clone 3 weeks+ ago, started at 1064, all seems finished but its at 1020. All my brews have ended higher than expected (only 6 brews so far, all with a grainfather), so this is not entirely unexpected. The others had a lower OG but finished 1014-1016. Mash was at 66C -...

    concentrated AG wort

I have been wondering about similar things when producing relatively low ABV beers, I could make a 1064 gravity wort and then dilute with boiled/cooled water to make twice as much 1032 wort - I realise I would need to increase the hops significantly more than twice the amount for a single brew...

    Flame out hops

I'm not sure why you see this as a problem: Switch off the boil, use the counterflow chiller flowing back into the boiler to drop it to 80C, then stop chilling, add the hops and stir. Switch back to "mash" with a set temp of 80C, leave for 30 minutes (or however long you want), switch off heat...

    Heat sterilising all-metal corny kegs

I have several 23 litre corny kegs, which I use for fermentation and serving. They are Chinese ones from Kegtopia and seem good quality, and have a 60PSI pressure relief valve built in. Apart from the O-rings and valve insert they are all-metal, with no plastic/metal boot or top shield. I was...

    Strange request

I'm not too far from Buxton. Though never heard of Eebria. I could possibly buy from Buxton brewery direct, and forward to you. Why are you so keen to get hold of a couple of bottles??!!

    Brewing equipment

I went for the grainfather, and not regretting it so far. I guess both systems do a similar job, but the Brewster seemed to have lots of pipework connections to go wrong, and I preferred the grainfather's recirculating system, and having a top plate to sparge onto looked like it would keep the...

    Britains next top brewer

We had a "bakeoff" competition at work, with people making cakes, and them being judged (just a one-off), then they were sold for charity. I did suggest a "Brewoff" would be possible, but as there is a "no alcohol at work" policy there's not much chance of that!

    Anyone doing dry January?

Hard to remember (it was a long time ago), maybe a couple of weeks, but it faded away gradually.
