    43 days later...

Hi all I thought I would share may latest brewing saga, A few years ago when I started brewing I asked the forum for help as I was getting low attenuation when brewing Stouts and Porters, after some advice I stuck to recipes with a higher percentage of base malts and since then I have had no...

    Yeast failure

Hi all, I brewed an Abbey beer last week (10l batch) using Whyeast Abbey yeast . The pack did not swell that much before pitching and was nearly 6 months old. I have had that happen before so I was not not to worried. But there was no sign of Fermentation the next day, I did mange to get some...

A Septic's Trip to the UK

Cornwall will have lots of St Austell's Korev, Tribute and Proper Job which are all good local beers. I like their Mena Dhu stout too. IMO there is far more choice in the 'people's republic of ' Yorkshire. Too much cider down here

Attenuation help with dark beers please

As I finish drinking my Dark beers I thought I would feedback and give thanks as after the advice above I selected brews using less specialist malts, and had some great results with Greg Hughes Dark American Larger, Terry Foster's Dam Good Stout & Nevesky Prospect Imperial Stout. So in...

Priming sugar effects on FG and ABV

Hi all I bottled a Belgian beer earlier and mistakenly took the FG reading after adding the priming sugar, I had checked the gravity two days ago so I know fermentation was complete. I had an idea to adjust the FG reading by using Brewer's friend to calculate the effect of the sugar used on...

    Forgot to order the hops

Bloody annoyed I buy a couple a brews worth of Custom kit ingredients all at once to save on P&P, and I thought I would sneak in an easy brew this morning as Im unexpectedly at home today - Greg Hughes Spring Beer, brewed last year and it was spot on. Few hours later went to put the hops...

    Belgian Brewing book

Thanks, I have brought Pierre Rajotte's Book, its pretty much what i was looking for. It definitely needs updating though: it suggests Table Beer is good for Pregnant Women or people who are driving, and I'm guessing there was no live yeast back in 92 as the main source of yeast is to buy some...

    Belgian Brewing book

Anyone have good recommendations for a Belgian brewing book? I have done a few a recipes from the Greg Hughes book and now I'm looking for more info and recipes in the style. I found the Terry Foster Porters & Stouts book very useful for that style and ideally would like the Belgian...

Attenuation help with dark beers please

Thanks all, Looking back at the recipes the 2 worst performing (Cream Crackered stout, and Hamertoinan Oatmeal stout) have low % of base malts, whilst other recipes have a much higher % of base malts. So maybe I picked some 'harder' to mash recipes. As for temp I follow the recipes and my tun...

Attenuation help with dark beers please

Thanks, I understand this logic, but I do not understand the published book which gives the grain bills, OG, & FG being so far out? I just checked my scaled recipes and the grain bills are the same % as the recipes.

Attenuation help with dark beers please

I have been scaling the reicpies from the book using brewers friend, and i am hitting the recipe OG, but not getting down to the FG. I have been leaving them in primary longer then my other brews but the gravity does not budge. I believe I am already over pitching by using a whole pack of yeast...

Attenuation help with dark beers please

I have used other yeast brands too. For the dark beers I have been using MJ Liberty Bell, a Safale (forget which one) and MJ Bavarian Lager for the Baltic Porter. When I added more yeast the Gravity did not move, so I assume the lively bottles were due to the extra yeast and priming sugar...

Hi, hopefully someone can help me out with this problem as I have been disappointed with my last few brews, to point of wanting to give up brewing dark beers (which I love in the winter) I have brewed 4 porters & stouts from Terry Fosters Porters & Stouts book; a basic Porter, Milk Stout, Oat...

    Autumn Ale

Hi, I like to brew seasonally, so now Im drinking the lagers and hoppy Ales I brewed in spring. I have lots dark brews planned for winter but nothing specific to Autumn. Im thinking of the Red Ales some brewers make in Autumn. I could be wrong but the general recipe bible that is Greg Hughes...

    Dont be fooled

Interesting thread! I Work in the water industry and I am often frustrated with how the water companies agree their rates/profits with ofwat every 5yrs then desperately spend all that money building things that wont last/wont work/not required, because ultimately they don't care, they just have...

    Rye Beer Efficiency problem

Hi My first Rye Beer brew has raised a few questions which I was wondering if any can help with? I recently brewed a AG in the bag Rye beer with about 55% Rye Malt and 45% Pale Malt. When removing the bag I noticed the grains were very slimy which I have never experienced before, almost like...

    Belgian flip top bottles

Hi, I use a mixture of mini kegs and flip top bottles and I am looking at getting some 330ml Belgian flip top bottles for my latest Belgian brew. So far I can only find these in France and Belgium the price is reasonable (about 1.30 euro each) but the postage is quite high. So my question...
