    What did you brew today?

I've just used a kviek yeast for the first time (the Lutra strain from Omega) in a pseudo lager. It's a Vienna lager and I fermented at the lower end of the yeast's temperature range which apparently gives the cleanest flavour profile, ideal for a lager. Clarity isn't something that normally...

    Free Yeast!

Does anybody want a free smack-pack sachet of Wyeast 3068 Weihenstephan Weizen? I ordered it to help fix a stuck fermentation, which then un-stuck with a bit of heat and stirring! Wyeast pack is fresh and I can't use it but don't want to waste it either.

    Recipe help required pls.....

I'm brewing BIAB no sparge but want to follow Greg Hughes recipes, which seem to only cover the full-mash method. I need to know how much water to add at the beginning to end up with 23 ltrs of wort and what temp the water needs to be at to end up at the right mash temp once the grain is added...

Seasonal Forum Competition - November 17

The chocolate orange stout sounds pretty interesting to me - would be happy to try using fruit for the first time too though.

    What did you brew today?

On Friday evening I did a Mosquito Amber Ale " from James Morton’s book ‘Brew’. 3000g Maris Otter, 2000g Munich Malt, 250g Pale Crystal Malt, 250g Crystal Malt, 200g Dingemans Special B, 100g Hops - Chinook Pellets, 100g Hops - Columbus Pellets. 60 minute mash...

    Too warm to brew?

I use an old freezer and Inkbird. The advantage is that you can use it for lagering too, whereas a fridge generally can't reach low enough temperatures (about 1 degree). As the freezers usually also have drain-holes somewhere in the bottom, you can thread the temperature sensor in that way...

    What did you brew today?

Just made up my second BIAB brew - a Kolsch. 100% German Pilsner malt with Hallertauer Mittelfrüh pellets and Safale K-97 dry yeast. 60 minute mash at 65 degrees with hop additions at 60 mins, 15 mins and flameout. Hoping for a nice summer beer:thumb:

    What did you brew today?

Brewed my first All-Grain on Saturday using a BIAB set up with a pot and burner bought from a member on this forum. It's a British Brown Ale I chose because of the simple brew schedule (just one hope addition right at the start). The temperature dropped more than I'd hoped during the mash-in...

Books to buy for a newbie

I'd really recommend "Brew: The Foolproof Guide to Making Your Own Beer at Home" by James Morton. I bought it before starting my first kit and it guides you through every step (with pictures) and then moves on to your first All Grain. I wouldn't be brewing without this book.

    Brewing Fridge Controller

Hi Old_Bob, I use an Inkbird ITC 308, it only cost around £40 from Amazon and worked really well. Very simple to use - you just plug in your heater/fridge, set the temps and it does the rest. I can't help with the heater size though, I was only using the fridge because I was doing a lager...

Hi Mattpc, Do you still have the Stockpot and Burner? I'm interested in both, if you can still ship them? I'm in Fife. Cheers.

Kit Yeast What Do You Do

I've never had a stuck fermentation or any problems achieving the target FG - and I've always thrown the kit yeast away and replaced with an appropriate 11.5g sachet from Fermentis or whoever. I always re-hydrate before pitching. Just my own experience of course. I think the problem with the...

Hi there, hello -Looking to move on from brewing kits

I'm far from an expert, but I've found James Morton's book 'Brew' very helpful. It's an enthusiastic and well informed guide: £13.60 on Amazon.

    Which kit next?

Thank for the recommendations - I've ordered a Woodfordes Wherry from Wilko and will get it on as soon as my stout is bottled!

    Which kit next?

Thanks LarryF, I'm drinking a Coopers Wheat Beer, fermented with 800g light DME and batch primed with 225g sugar. Got it down from 1.058 to 1.010 and I'm really pleased with it. Like I said, I like sweeter beer. I've got a Coopers Irish Stout on the go at the moment but I'm intrigued by the...

    Which kit next?

Hi, I'm a new brewer and have made one kit and have another in the fermenter - I'm looking for some recommendations about what kit to go for next? I'm looking for something with relatively low alcohol,l so I can have a few without falling down. Also, I'm not a huge fan of really hoppy brews, I...
