    Recipe for a mild?

My recent brew based on Greg Hughes SH Dark ruby mild, I added a few handfulls of roasted Barley as I only had light crystal malt instead of the dark crystal I would normally use. It turned out great, colours about right too which was good as it was just guesswork.

SS Brew Bucket Pressure Transfer Modification

I would be worried about forgetting to open the valve and damaging the fermenter with this set up. the way I do closed transfers with the brewbucket is gravity feeds the beer to the corny keg, the co2 displaced from the keg is fed back into the top of the fermenter, hence no oxygen is...

    Brew buckets

I use the SS brewbucket with ftss temperature control. Its an expensive bit of kit and probably not worth it for most brewers but for me has the following advantages:- 1) conical base , less beer is in contact with dead yeast cells, 2) bottom tap, dont have to use syphons and easy to draw off a...

    Beer engine

I have been wanting a beer engine for years and recently bought the pint365 which is a beer engine designed for home use. I love it, there is no wasted beer with this, I have been using either a polypin or small mini keg as an intermediate vessel transferring the beer to these from corny kegs...

    Going back to kits...

I'd be interested in how it turns out. I've considered doing a Wherry again as an experiment which was my kit of choice before starting all grain. But returning to kits lacks the excitement for me of creating a beer from scratch however if i was short of brewing time would like to give it a go.

    Pint365 beer engine

It took 6 months from me starting this thread till I ordered one, but I was thinking about how many pubs and breweries wouldn't survive another lockdown and persuaded myself it was my patriotic duty to keep real ale traditions alive.:laugh8: very pleased with it so far, i have been transferring...

I want to get into all grain. Smallest pot??

yes, thats basically it. you may need slightly more grain as its probably not as efficient as doing it in a larger pot. make sure the cold water you top up with has been suitably treated ie chlorine removed.

I want to get into all grain. Smallest pot??

yes you could, you could also brew a stronger beer and water it back to get your aimed for 20 Litres in the fermenter.

    Cask breather troubleshooting

I suspect its not the answer your looking for but my easy way to avoid CO2 leaking is to switch it off and disconnect when not in use.

    Greg Hughes recipes

I've done quite a few from the book but the one I keep going back to is the Spring beer, I modify it slightly to get 2 brews from 100g Waiti / Galaxy

I want to get into all grain. Smallest pot??

when I started with BIAB I used a 15 L stockpot and got some great beers brewing 10L at a time but if your aiming for a finished 20 Litre brew then i think you'll be disappointed with anything less than 30 litres. there's advantages to going smaller such as more choice if your willing to brew...

    Brew years resolutions?

I noticed quite a few people want to start using liquid yeasts and that would of been me 2 or 3 years back but i've now decided i'm good with dried yeasts. Whilst liquid yeasts give you much more choice I have come to the conclusion that to my tastes dried yeasts give just as good a result with...

Odd side effects of certain beers. (besides the obvious)

Having read that hops were good for sleep I once slept with a pot of dried hops next to me, weirdest dreams ever, never again

    Pint365 beer engine

How do you find it between uses? does the first pump or so need to be chucked after a few days of non use or is it necessary to flush through with water after each use. can you not raise your pressure barrel to prevent that problem? im guessing you have it stored quite low in relation to the...

@An Ankoù worked a treat, thanksclapaathumb.. couldnt find a drillbit the right size but a nail did the trick. personally i prefer to use propane in the garden or a occasionally a well ventilated garage but my mother in law who lives in a remote area has it piped into her kitchen and cooks on...

propane burner yellow flame / sooty

Can anyone tell me why my propane burner cannot now be adjusted to give a blue flame? it used to work fine, it has a collar on than can be adjusted to control the air/gas mix but I can now only get a yellow flame which leaves my kettle very sooty. still get a good boil though.

    Time to harvest hops

Bedfordshire here, picked my EKG yesterday. They were growing up an old sailing dinghy mast, the ones lower down that I could get to to test weren't quite ready but noticed the higher ones starting to brown so decided to lower the mast and pick, probably about right timing for the majority.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

It's taken 4 years for my EKG to get established but finally got a decent crop which I picked yesterday. I've Seen mixed reviews on freezing fresh green hops but that is what I've done with these.
