    Holidays

"supposed" ? really ? i dont recall any such instruction from a government that seemed to think it had the right to micromanage every aspect of our lives. And the online learning put in place was shambolic. I'm interested on what your basis is for saying this ? Edit - it seems my subsequent...

    Holidays

exactly this - schools were perfectly happy to close for weather warnings (not actual bad weather), strikes, staff training days and - of course - lockdowns. The government's revealed behaviour during those incidents was that it didn't care one iota about our children's education and for it to...

    Mobile phone backups

i agree cloud is the way to go. I hate to pay for apps, but I do pay for Flickr, as it uploads all my photos and vids automatically, and I can use it to host images I want to post online. Worth the money in my view.

    cyclists

yes - a bit of common sense and courtesy goes a long way. A better sign should probably read something like "Cyclists - please ride considerately and give priority to pedestrians" but (i) sensible advice like that has no place in the deep culture of authoritarianism that permeates UK politics...

    Electric cars.

a few brief responses - the recent energy on this thread stemmed from me posting the facts around what the Lords report said, so I am content with my ability to evidence my arguments. As for "arguing from personal disbelief" isn't this what everyone does on debates that are not settled, picking...

    Trump v Biden

Removed - following a mod editing the post to remove part of it, and meaning the context was lost on the rest.

    Electric cars.

here you go, post 1100 in this very thread. If you want to give it out that's fine, but I think you need to prepare yourself for some banter in return..... https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/electric-cars.100585/page-55#post-1244652

    Electric cars.

it was a joke ! Like when you said one of my links contained "total BS" even when you admitted you hadn't read it..... which i found hilarious.....

    Electric cars.

I agree. Do feel free to give it a try sometime...🤣 You are right that the London CC shows us how this might go - but the big point is this. There are two diametrically opposed policy objectives here - one is financially incentivising the takeup of EVs and the other is the tax revenue...

    Electric cars.

a few gems in there 1. The risk that a flawed government incentive scheme leads to a boatload of cars being purchased that are at best white elephants and at worst even more environmentally harmful than the ICE cars being phased out. For those who thing this is scaremongering, it is exactly...

    Electric cars.

you seem very certain ! joking apart - you may very well be right. But the devil is in the detail. - if fuel duty remains high then ICE owners will (justifiably) say they are being double taxed. This of course would continue the "refuelling" price advantage that EV owners currently enjoy, and...

    Electric cars.

Interesting couple of weeks for electric cars. The take-up rate seems to be falling behind the level that our commisars have determined we should purchase them at. The House of Lords study seems to be quite a good summary of the issues...

    2023 Apple Harvest Cider Thread

Yes, I am fortunate that my apples come out that strong naturally - regardless of when i pick them, within reason. We have acidic soil here and the main trees are 100s of years old we think - which seems to be ideal conditions for apples. When i first researched cider a few years back, I...

    Apple picking

if you have a look at mine and Freesters annual threads in the Brewdays section you will see step by step instructions for cider from apples. A few more thoughts re the specifics on here: 1. I dont freeze as I invested in an electric scratter. I'd say if you are making 30 litres plus per...

    2023 Apple Harvest Cider Thread

Bottled it all last night, the usual drill but a few reflections: - Secondary is definitely, definitely worth the effort. It was so smooth coming out of the fermenter that topping up my glass every now and then meant it ended up being a very mellow evening...... - people probably do this, but...

The downfall of the Tory party.

100% this. The closure is a direct result of the net zero madness. It was utter hypocricy for Labour to condemn the closure, whilst at the same time claiming they would pursue an even harder net zero agenda than the Tories. There's plenty to bash the conservative government for, but in this...

The downfall of the Tory party.

6 months in prison for carrying what, exactly ? Zombie knives only, or anything that could be used to stab someone ? As this is all taking place in a Tory party thread, it's probably also worth recording that knife crime is a pretty big problem in Wales and London also - where Labour are the...

Entire UK facing gales and downpours as Storm Isha blows in

I did read the article, thanks Chippy. And the specifics of what Starmer said were what I found funny.

Entire UK facing gales and downpours as Storm Isha blows in

I will confess to laughing out load when I saw the this - oh the luxury of opposition. I wont enjoy a Kier Starmer premiership, but I will enjoy absurd statements like this coming back to haunt him...

    The Post Office Horizon Scandal

i found out about a very bizarre quirk in UK procurement rules. Legally, public procurements are not allowed to take note of past performance when deciding on future bids. I dont know if this is an EU hangover that hasn't yet been fixed but it surely needs changing. As things stand, had...
