    Bucket Frothing Over

I always use a blowoff tube, just in case. However, you don't really want the krausen overflowing on a regular basis as it just increases the risk of infection or a really messy clear up exercise. Better to get a bigger bucket. They are cheap as chips.

    Gypsum Taste.

Lots of people make really nice beer using London water without using expensive kit. I used to think London water was no good for brewing because of the taste out of the tap and used Tesco's Ashbeck for lighter beers. I was quite surprised to find a few noted microbreweries that use London water...

    I can't seem to brew!

London water is generally fine for brewing (I live just outside) and should make good beer without any treatment. I use 1/2 crushed campden tablet in 30 litres water in the boiler just before heating to take the chlorine out but don't think its strictly necessary. Other than the good advice on...

How long will a normal fridge last in an outhouse as a Fermentation Chamber?

I have a couple of fridges, one for fermentation, one for kegs in an unheated detached garage. Had no problems with them in the winter. Most fridges state they should be used in areas above 5 degrees centigrade. You'll probably be OK but if I was buying new I'd get a Beko. They seem to be rated...

As a matter of interest Not_so_brite where abouts are you in the UK? One of the Members in your area might be able to tell you something about your water.

    Beko Fridge Help

It's possible, but as the motor is cutting out when 5°c is reached (rather than running on), I suspect it's the thermostat.

    Beko Fridge Help

Hi all I have recently acquired a second fridge to use for conditioning / lagering. However, even when on full it does not go below 5°c. I plan to control it with my Inkbird and need to access the thermostat to either reset or bypass it. Unlike most fridges, the control knob and light are in...

    Protofloc

I have been using White Labs Clarity Ferm for my light coloured beers if I want them to be as clear as commercial examples and have been getting excellent results. Added to fermentor when you pitch the yeast.

    Bottling - Tips?

I've reduced the number of bottles by reusing supermarket 5 litre mini kegs. A couple of these makes a big dent in the number of bottles you need. Not as good as corny kegs but much cheaper and they fit into the fridge.

    Modifying a buffalo boiler

Hi both and many thanks for your responses. I have read a couple of posts elsewhere that suggested the heating element had burned out and had to be replaced. These were from people who had modified. Not in any way evidence, just speculation on my part. This is a tricky subject as there are...

    Modifying a buffalo boiler

When you say the temp sensor do you mean the thermostat (long metal tube) or the thermal cut out in the centre of the base? What are you using as the PID? Thinking of converting my Buffalo to reduce the risk of losing power during the boil but would prefer not to disconnect all safety devices...

    Infrared Thermometer £4.10

Just tried mine on the side of my fv (white plastic bucket) and it was pretty accurate compared with my Inkbird (about 1 degree difference), so pretty good for this purpose. Have found big differences when using on the surface of liquid compared with an immersed thermometer and would not trust...

    Modifying a buffalo boiler

Have you modified the buffalo electrics to maintain a constant boil or are you just using it to mash?

    Infrared Thermometer £4.10

I have had one of these for a while. It was a good quality one from Maplin and was purchased for other purposes. Good tool but need to be careful when measuring clear liquids or through glass as my own experience is that its not accurate for that. Also measures the temp at the top of the liquid...

    rhubarb wine a bit dry

I have made a batch of rhubarb wine and its also very dry. Used Youngs wine sweetener to good effect. If you are going to add to bottle and then reseal, I would suggest using this rather than a sugar solution which could restart fermentation and give you a fizzy wine. Suggest trying 1\3 teaspoon...

    Hi from Hertfordshire

Hello all I am returning to brewing after a break of over 20 years and things seem to have moved on quite a bit. I am a real ale enthusiast and member of CAMRA. My previous attempts didn't really live up to commercial standards and I'm hoping to improve a bit with help from the forum. I...
