    BeerBots

Nanostructured Hybrid BioBots for Beer Brewing This is a paper from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, published in the American Chemical Society ACS Nano journal. The bots are 2mm beads with yeast in them. They are dropped in the wort, sink to the bottom, ferment the sugars...

    Pubs in Kendal serving food

Try The Factory Tap or the Barrel House at Castle Mills - across the river from the town centre. Or the Handsome bar on Kent Street. Their brewery is a couple of miles upstream - one of several in the area. (Hawkshead Brewery in Staveley; Watermill Inn at Ings; Coniston Brewing Co; Lakes...

    Anyone here bought bitcoin?

No. Two financial rules I follow: 1. Never invest in something you do not understand 2. Don’t look for financial advice on a home brewing blog!

Equipment For Sale Speidel Braumeister BM20 and accessories

This is a bargain - less than a third of the price of the current model. I have an even older one (about 2009) and highly recommend the Braumeisters.

BM20 - Malt Pipe Seal Issues

The bit I did not explain well was that the wires only go in after sparging. I put them in place while the pipe is hanging clear of the bottom. (I have never had trouble with the seal falling off before this point). Not the easiest thing to photograph - hope these help.

BM20 - Malt Pipe Seal Issues

I have had the seal fall off a few times, but it was always as I was removing the malt pipe after sparging. I recovered the seal after the boil and removing the cooled wort - with no apparent damage. I have had the BM about 10 years with many brews and have never needed to replace this seal...

    Weighing Scales for closed transfer.

Watching the condensation line works well, particularly in a warm damp room. Just beware of the slight delay. Or you can work on your biceps lifting the keg on and off the bathroom scales. As Slickchilli noted, most parcel scales auto-off which is a nuisance for this application. MyWeigh...

Andrew Neil to leave the BBC 'with heavy heart'

It is stating the bleeding obvious, but TV news relies on pictures. Radio does not. For TV, this is a strength and a weakness. The strength - TV can use pictures to help explain s a story – like a volcanic eruption. The weakness - TV must fill that screen, whatever the story. This has two...

    Smallest 4-keg keezer solution?

Aha, neat! I tried to guess but wasn't even close.

    Smallest 4-keg keezer solution?

Sorry if this is a dumb question - what are the "collars" mentioned in this discussion?

Is a month ok to be drinking a beer?

Agreed - I can only comment on the beers I brew. My perception is that the hops fade a little as time goes by. Otherwise I find the malt stays constant. I know that conventional wisdom in home brewing goes against my observations here.

Is a month ok to be drinking a beer?

My beers generally finish fermenting in 3 to 4 days, then 1 day to chill plus 1 or 2 days to clarify with colloidal silica before transfer to a corny keg. Some yeast (e.g. WLP028 Edinburgh Scottish Ale) does not need clarification. Altogether this is 7 days from grain to glass. These are all...

    Co2 serving pressure?

Am I right to think that: this discussion was only about the length of beer hose, and the length of gas hose does not matter?

Brewing with river water.. Good/bad idea

Like Clint, I would be nervous about pesticides and chemicals from the land upstream. Slurry concerns me less since upland rivers are very good at cleaning up through natural processes. So it all depends on how much you know about what is happening upstream. My local stream runs clear unless...

    Trub Question

What is the helix? It looks like a cooling coil in the photos, but I can't figure out how that helps with trub.

    Best beer glass?

I have glasses with "frosting" etched inside the bottom and it does generate bubbles. ((Nucleation is the word, I think). This should help maintain the head but, personally that does not bother me. All the other comments about good clean glasses are spot on. Also the quality of the beer makes...

    Sous Vide Turkey on Grainfather

What a good idea. I got a sous vide wand for the missus for Xmas when I should have given her access to the Braumeister. Rats! I will probably get the vacuum packing gadget (and reusable bags) anyway - also useful for storing hops.

    Do you feed ducks bread?

That makes sense. So the answer is to feed them on the bank instead of throwing it onto the water. Easy!

SPENT GRAIN...BIRDS DONT LIKE IT ?

Distillers call their spent grain draff and it is used to feed livestock. I assume that commercial brewers do the same unless they have an awful lot of chooks. Years ago I was following a draff lorry with a loose tailgate spreading a thin layer of it on the road. End result, I went into a spin...
