    Homebrew expectations vs. commercial beer

Someone made a comment in a recent post I wrote that really got me thinking - basically I was explaining how my attempts at homebrew were not going well, however, they asked if I was perhaps being unfair in my expectations if I thought I would be making commercial quality beer at this stage. So...

    I can't seem to brew!

Thanks, all - really appreciate the advice and feedback. Central London. In any case, I have a bag of grains for a Californian Common, so will have a crack at this next weekend. Before I start, all equipment will go through a full clean and will use some of the approaches you have suggested...

    I can't seem to brew!

    Yes, unfortunately, I did.

    I can't seem to brew!

Not at all, at this stage, I was only ever looking for something that would just be drinkable, but even that seems to be too high a bar at present! One thing I've just remembered (that could be a massive no-no!!), is that I will often clean out the kettle and fermenter immediately after use in...

    I can't seem to brew!

Sodium percarbonate or VWP - could that be a problem?

    I can't seem to brew!

Thank you all - sounds like lots of valid points to consider so I will explore these in more detail. The strange thing is that at each stage of the process, all of the signs seem to indicate that the beer is coming along nicely: - my efficiency initially was not great, but then I realised that...

    I can't seem to brew!

Hmm, yes, I have been adding campden. When I take the lid of the fermenter it normally looks nice and normal inside so I hadn't thought any batches were infected but will do some more reading if that could be the cause of that.

    I can't seem to brew!

So, I've just had to pour yet another batch down the sink as it was a dud. I've made nine batches now and of these, I think only two have been drinkable. I started out with a fantastic little kit from Home Brewtique, and my first 5L batch (an IPA I think) came out great and was actually quite...

    Using a 5l mini-keg

Would someone be so kind as to explain exactly how I should be setting up and using my 5l mini-keg, or point me in the right direction? I can't for the life of me find a full set of instructions that goes into much detail. For reference, I'm using the kit from here...

    Conditioning in a mini-keg

Thanks, both - useful information. The reason for asking about storage was that I was thinking of getting a cheap keg like this one: https://brew2bottle.co.uk/collections/mini-kegs/products/5ltr-mini-keg-rubber-plug so I could put half the batch there and leave it un-carbonated, while I primed...

    Conditioning in a mini-keg

I have been using swing-top bottles up until now which have been great for my 5l batches, however as I'm now brewing 10l, I have bought a 5l mini-keg too so I can put half in here and the rest in the bottles. The mini-keg comes with a ball lock lid, regulator (it uses 16g CO2 cartridges), and...

    Improving my brew process

I've been taking some notes on my last few brews and this has helped highlight some areas I think could be improved. I wanted to share these to see if anyone else had come across them and had feedback. For reference, I am now doing 10(ish) litre BIAB all-grain recipes, using a SS Brewtech 20l...

    Plastic vs Stainless steel fermenter

Indeed, I am just starting out brewing and did my first few batches in a plastic fermenter which produced perfectly drinkable beers, however, having bottled the latest batch this morning following my first fermentation in a stainless steel fermenter I must say the overall experience was much...

    Minimalist BIAB equipment list?

Thanks all, very useful feedback. So I think I’ll go for something like: SS Brewtech 5.5 gallon kettle - this will be used for mash and boil SS Brewtech 3.5 gallon brew bucket mini - for fermentation I may also be able to fit the fermenter inside the kettle for storage when not in use which...

    Minimalist BIAB equipment list?

I've now brewed a few batches in the starter kit that I first purchased, and am very much enjoying this new hobby. I'd like to invest in some equipment to allow me to increase the size from the current 5l batches to somewhere between 10 and 15l. I'd prefer stainless steel over plastic or glass...
