NEIPA - more bitter than expected, what did I do wrong?

I'll definitely try this later today. If it's astringency, would that shed any light on what the cause would be?

NEIPA - more bitter than expected, what did I do wrong?

I use brewers friend for recipe calcs and it never adds IBUs for dry hops (what do you use to calculate?), i didnt think it made that much difference and was more about flavour and aroma for dry hop. How would swapping hops from dry hop to whirlpool reduce bitterness?

NEIPA - more bitter than expected, what did I do wrong?

How would throwing them loose affect astringency? I had used hop socks in the past, but when i removed them, all the hop pellets had disintegranted through leaving very little, so I didnt bother again

NEIPA - more bitter than expected, what did I do wrong?

I've drank it every few days over the past month after conditioning and its remained consistantly bitter, it not the hop burn kid, it's more the bitter you'd get in a ESB style. I thought the same with this recipe, so thought I'd chuck a smll amount in for 20 IBUs as the brewsheet for a few of...

NEIPA - more bitter than expected, what did I do wrong?

My method of chill is an ice bath (with admittedly not much ice so it can take a while). Initial temp for the first addition would of probably been around 90 degrees celcius. I hadn't boil hops in a few others I did, but saw lots of other breweries use them in their brew sheets in a very small...

NEIPA - more bitter than expected, what did I do wrong?

Hi, I brewed a NEIPA about a month or so ago, and every pour I've had from this batch has been so much more bitter than expected. I've brewed NEIPAs before without too much of an issue, but changed up my hop additions/timings in this brew. Is there anything I have done that would make this so...

Crushed Malt - How old is too old?

Sounds like it's usable then, and best not to leave grain this long in the future. Thanks for the advice

Crushed Malt - How old is too old?

Hi, I took a break from brewing since the start of 2022, but still have a lot of crushed grain that I purchased from Maltmiller around that time. The was a best before date of Mar'22 on it, but how "strict" is this date. I want to still use this if I can to avoid throwing it out. Is there...

    Inconsistant carbonation - any ideas?

Hi, I recently brewed an IPA that was bottle conditioned. The first few early bottles were perfectly carbonated, but as i drank the batch over a few weeks, I noticed minimal carbonation after the first handful. Also to note, i drank these in the order i bottled them. I used the same bottles...

    FREE citra hop pellets

Hi SRS, that would be ideal if I’m not too late. Happy to cover whatever postage. Love brewing with citra

Philly sour yeast and pellicules - help

Thanks, I did try it and it was fine, but just got worried as I hadn't seen anything like it before. I've chucked away the plastic fermentor and got a new one just to be safe. Had 20+ brews without any issues in it previously. As long as it tastes ok, is there any health dangers to what looks...

Philly sour yeast and pellicules - help

Hi, I have recently trying brewing with philly sour yeast from lallemand and post fermentation (with everything going to plan and hitting FG and pH) I opened my fermentor to see the image below. Thinking I must of messed up and gained an infection I threw this batch away, but after doing some...

    Yeast Nutrient

Sorry to piggy back on the OP, but I'm also considering using it for an imperial stout, but the packet of whitelabs yeast nutirent I have off a friend (previously opened) is out of date (by a few months). Does expiry date matter much with usage of yeast nutrient?

    Stout problem - Stuck Fermentation

Thanks. I dont have a pH reading from the brew, but I did check the temp throughout the mash to ensure it didn't fall to far from the target, and stirred for circulation periodically. US-05 states it 1 packet for 20-30litres so O thought underpitching wouldn't be an issue. I agitated the wort...

    Stout problem - Stuck Fermentation

66c/67c for 60 mins. How would mash temp influence a stalled fermentation?

    Stout problem - Stuck Fermentation

Hi, I recently brewed a BIAB batch of what I hoped would be an imperial stout with an initial OG of 1.084 and an expected FG of 1.017 on a 14 litre batch pitched with US-05. After 4 days I checked the fermenation which gave a gravity reading of 1.040. I then checked a further 6 days later and...

EC118 suitable for bottling big imperial stouts?

Hi, When brewing imperial stouts (around 8-10% strength) in the past I've stuggled with carbonation. Normally I've overpitched with US-05, but I've read that EC118 can help with strong beer carbonation due to its 18% alcohol tolerance. I bottle condition and dont have the ability to keg...

Cooling - Am I doing anything wrong?

Hi, I have a 25l stock pot as my kettle for the boil of my brews. Once I'm done, I make an ice bath in the sink, whirlpool my hops, and cool down the wort through that method for pitching. It's not the fastest in the world, but it means a low cost suloution for me for now. What I wanted to ask...

    BlackBerry abundance

I used our blackberry abundance from our alotment to make a blackberry new england IPA. I was sceptical at first and didn't know how it would all come together, but the citra hops worked great with the flavours, and some lactose balanced out the blackberries to get the right amount of sweet...
