    Anna's Brewdays

I somehow missed this originally, but if you’re ever on the mainland waiting for a ferry drop me a message if you fancy a blether. I live in Halkirk (6 miles from Thurso) and work in Thurso 3 days a week. Highly recommend the distillery just a few mins from Scrabster by the way (Wolfburn)...

    Pressurised Fermentation practical use

What I do with my bottles is put some crushed ice in my bottle cleaner device (you know the one you put the bottle over and push it down a few times as the starsan/other sanitiser squirts up). - this seems to reduce the temp in the bottles enough that it reduces foaming. Works for me anyway :-)

Using a muslin bag over the end of a siphon tube

I sometimes do this but when moving the wort from mash tun to boiler or boiler to FV. I just leave my bag steeped in starsan and then filter through it. Gets the worst of the bits out and I think helps with a cleaner beer. Never had any probs.

    scottish trip - bottle swaps?

I’m near Thurso (Halkirk). If you still plan this far north let me know, I’m usually working from home on a Tuesday so might be able to grab half an hour for a quick blether! Not many real ale places up here. The comm bar in Thurso usually has a cask ale on (but just one pump). The Ulbster arms...

    Heating elements on the blink

Not quite a polish 😂 Just a good scrub and clean on the outside. I wondered if they were so dirty that it was throwing them off so they thought they were hotter than the actual surrounding water temp? Either way - they seem to be working fine now….probably until the next brew day! 😜

    Heating elements on the blink

Have this a blast today with just a small amount of water but up to boiling temp and happy to report that both elements seem to be working perfect! Looks like they just needed a good scrub and polish 🤓

    Heating elements on the blink

Thanks guys, good info here, much appreciated! I’m going to give it another go with water now that I’ve cleaned them up and see how it goes. I’ll keep you up to date 👍🏻

    Heating elements on the blink

Here’s a few pics of the elements. They would click in (and turn on) for a short period, maybe a minute or so and then click off. Like some sort of relay? These are pics AFTER cleaning. Should gave taken before pics, but they weren’t overly baked.

    Heating elements on the blink

There is no thermostat though (unless there is one built into the element?) - it’s just a straight power cord to the each element. Yep - power draw drops when they click out 😞

    Heating elements on the blink

Had a brew day last Saturday using my 60L kettle. All was going okay - mashed in left for an hour, sparged, transferred to kettle and turned my two heating elements on. Then came lots of waiting! The elements kept “clicking” off and on so after about an hour and a half I was only at 94C and not...

    Four Priests Brewery YouTube channel

More of Sarah ☺️ she must make a lot of sacrifices for you to be in that brewery so much (although mine quite enjoys the peace and quiet!) but she seems really supportive. Is she helping with anything behind the scenes? What’s her take on the whole project? A slightly different angle on things...

Help my fridge keep it's cool!

Cool thanks @MashBag, I'll adjust accordingly. Would 7 corny kegs of beer count as thermal mass? :laugh8: That's currently what I have in there - and I can squeeze an 8th back in there now that I don't have to faff about with that thermostat/control unit. I think I'm going to get the STC...

Help my fridge keep it's cool!

Ah cool thanks. I think that’s fine then - this is the chart over about a 6 hour period. Seems pretty good to the untrained eye?

Help my fridge keep it's cool!

I’ve got both and inkbird 308 and a spare STC-1000. I use my inkbird on brew days. Would I be better getting another or is the STC just as good/better? What’s the recommended delay for the fridge setting then? I know I could google it but I trust you guys more 😬

Help my fridge keep it's cool!

So far so good. Set it to 5C on my inkbird and seems to be holding at or around that temp based on the compressor getting switched on/off.

Help my fridge keep it's cool!

Long time in getting back to this, sorry! But have connected live and neutral directly to compressor (and earthed) and something is working. It’s making a bit of gurgling noise but I’ve left it running for now with a temp probe inside the fridge and will see if it brings the temp down. Assuming...

Help my fridge keep it's cool!

Well this just gets more and more annoying. Tried as suggested @MashBag, removed black cable and connected the live instead. Switched on, nothing. With better light today was able to disconnect that terminal at the back of the fridge completely from the compressor and have tested both the...
