    Allowing For Age Of Hops

Is all this diminishing AA% and flavour loss, hear say, or just know so. I regularly use year or two old hops and get great results. Has any body else done any experimental results other than the guy in the http://brulosophy.com/2015/09/28/the...iment-results/ link I posted earlier. I...

    Allowing For Age Of Hops

The results of actually trying to use old hops...... Interesting experimental results.... http://brulosophy.com/2015/09/28/the-impact-of-age-hops-exbeeriment-results/

    Massive bad day

I've lost 5 galls of beautiful Dark Star Pale, (and I'm in the ****) Yesterday I brought in a new cornie, tonight I came to pour myself a well earned pint, and it was empty. ****. The whole lot has gone down under the oak flooring. 'Trouble and strife' was livid. I'm on the verge of having my...

    Cornie Poppet and Post exchange

I have 3 ball lock and 3 pin lock cornies. I've had enough messing, and want to swap out so I have one system only. Would prefer to retain pin lock, but whatever. Anybody out there in a similar situation? As far as I'm aware the thread in the cornies is common and its a straight bolt on...

    Freezing Yeast

I confirm using my non scientific approach... just tipping-17degC yeast (mixed approx 50:50) into room temp starter, worked! But I'm guessing there was a high attrition rate, ie many of the yeasties died. Far too much 'trub' (yeast on the bottom of the conical), than I would usually anticipate...

    Freezing Yeast

I'm afraid I was a bit lazy and didn't re-sanitize the wort from the failed first attempt (frozen yeast very slowly acclimatised from -17 to 20degC temp). I just tipped in the remains of my frozen approx 15ml phial (I used approx 1/3 for first attempt) so approx 10ml straight from the freezer...

    Freezing Yeast

No good news on my technique so far. Over 24hrs and nothing. I'll let it go another 24hrs and if still nothing I will auto clave this wort and repeat, trying another sample but de-frosting faster. I haven't totally given up, but its not looking good.

    Freezing Yeast

Ooh erh. You guys are worrying me! Technically I seem way out of my depth. My experiment continues... stage 1 The wort was put on the stir plate, oxygenated, and then gently combined with my sleeping beauties now at room temp. We await ... I don't expect anything for 24hrs.

A week old Wyeast 1335 top cropped.

    Freezing Yeast

Yup! Just read all that... I've got too high a glycerine ratio, and I flash froze. So by all accounts my chances a iffy. It's important to learn by mistakes so I'll keep you posted. I should note that my frozen sample had separated into approximately 50/50 dark and clear quotients. I shook and...

    Freezing Yeast

OK cryogenic thaw underway. 1 phil under ice in fridge. I guess it will take the rest of the day to reach 5degC. I have saved sweet wort stored from autoclave (pressure cooker) also put in the fridge. I plan to unite chilled yeast and wort and then bring slowly to room temp. Any...

    Freezing Yeast

I co-incidentally am also trying this process. Perhaps I should have looked on-line earlier.... I have just used thick slurry and about a 50% glycerin mix, in glass tubes with screw lids (previously used for slants). What's the point of the additional water? I'm storing at about -17degC and have...

    More on hop planting

Thank you Together to develop and spread the knowledge. Good works.

    More on hop planting

Thanks for the reply. I was looking for rhysomes. Nodduley bits of root which are independently viable. I was hoping to get an early start in establishing a new plant this year. They are currently being sold by nursery firms so I think now is the time. My question really is what is a rhysome...

    More on hop planting

I went down the allotment and had a good dig around my 3 year established Cascade hop plant. I was looking for rhysomes to propagate further plants. Unfortunately there were nothing resembling nodules on any roots. There were many horizontal runner roots radiating away from the central heart. I...

    Gas regulator repair.

Just had a shitty brew day. My own fault.... 1) knocked over my co2 bottles and damaged the gauges and 2) Cardinal sin... can't count... my grain bill was 1kg short; so had to boil the bejesus out of it to get it somewhat back to an acceptable OG. Need less to say the hop schedule is now all...

Mash temperature monitoring. My Xmas pressy to me

I recently had a very perculiar brew which came out with sweeter malty undertones than previous incarnations of the same receipe. I put this down to a possibly too hot a mash; but my brew records show that, at the time, I had no incling of a problem in this regard. So to cut to the quick.... I...

    Growing Hops??

I'm rather proud of my new babies. Cast your curser back a few pages and I reported that my hop shoots had been eaten by a passing creature. Well the good news is that there was one shoot left. I only planted it this year and didn't expect any produce.... but it looks as if I'm going to get at...
