    Star san is not foaming

Dosen't really need to foam in my opinion. I've kept a bucket of Starsan for an extended period of time and still used it to sanitise bottles and I've had no infections, foam or no foam. The foam isn't too important, just as long as the equipment/FV is covered in Starsan solution for at least 30...

can you freeze plums for winemaking later on

Last year I just cut the plums in half, remove the stones, vacuum pack them into big bags and then freeze them and they keep well until needed. When defrosting they turn mushy so you don't need to physically mash the fruit youself :) jobs a gud un.

Ritchies On the Rocks, Mixed Berry Cider Review

I thought it tasted a bit funny at first (a slight chemically/artificial taste) but after about 8 weeks it improved alot and was quite drinkable after that time, the mixed berry flavours came out nicely. :thumb: Will I miss this limited edition kit? Probably not. It's nice but there are better...

How to Brew - John J. Palmer

Quite simply this book is amazing. First started out with Graham Wheelers - Brew Your Own 3rd edition, which gives you a basic idea of brewing, equipment needed, hops, ingredients etc to get you started. How To Brew provides an indepth look at all aspects of brewing and each of the individiual...

    Ritchies, Simply Ginger Beer Review

Brewed this up last month using 800g Extra Light DME and 200g Dextrose. It takes awhiles for it to taste good but I wish they didnt add the sweetner as it's too sweet for a ginger beer (personally) although the ginger is just about fiery enough, not bad though. Theres also a Simply Range of...

Ritchies On The Rocks, Raspberry and Lime Review

A very good kit. Kit mixed in with 22 litres of water and 1300 grams of Dextrose, poured the flavouring into the bottling bucket when it came to bottle the cider, mixes in really well . The cider is pretty good after 2 weeks in the FV and 2 weeks carbonating in the bottle. Gorgeous raspberry...

Length of time in pressure barrel

As long as theres no leaks for oxygen to get in it should last for about 12 months. Longest I've left a beer in a pressure barrel is about 8 months, still tasted fine. A 4.5% stout could be brewed in October so by December it will have reached it's peak condition.

    Tescos Selling Beer Kits

Tesco Extra have been selling them for about two years and just recently my nearest tesco has demoted the homebrew section from a large area to a smaller one, the half price kits and equipment just indicate that the stuff is not shifting fast enough (as you can tell when you walk by the HB...

    North east home brew club

On back shift that week  , just had a look at the event on JBK and there seems to be a lot of interest, I see quite alot of events for other parts of the UK but hardly any for the NE (or i'm blind). This is a great idea, I'm hoping it goes well.

Does making home brew increase consumption?

Yes you will most likely drink more. I tend to have 2 or 3 during the week but I only ever binge at the weekend with mates  . It gets harder to resist when you brew exceptional brews :S As for more fattening, the stronger the beer the more calories it has, thats true with any beer, home...

    Question regarding spraymalt

No probs , never hurts to ask. :thumb: . Paying extra for spraymalt is definitely worth it too

    Question regarding spraymalt

Hi. It shouldn't make too much difference, the darker the extract the darker the beer so as your brewing a stout I would just go with Dark Spraymalt. Dark DME alsos adds a more roasted/chocolately character to it (also desirable in a stout). Or you can use Light DME and steep dark roasted...

    Batch sparge effiency

Aye, thats exactly right. When your adding the sparge water monitor the temp closely so you don't go over 80 C as you don't want to extract tannins from the grains. The Infusion Tool helps quite a bit at this point. :thumb: As the the pump, it may help but I've never use one so can't confirm...

    Batch sparge effiency

Since I also use Beersmith 2 theres only one explanation. The sparge temps are a bit low and the software will tell you to sparge with 75 degrees instead of 85 - 90 degrees. Once the grain bed has been drained the temperature lowers quite a bit so if you add say 75 degrees (like Beersmith tells...

    Aquarium Heater

I bought a couple of trugs from tesco to hold my FV in surrounded by water with the immersion heater heatign the water in the trug. My beer go heated up to around 25 - 30 degrees and fermentation finished in about 2 -3 days  . No idea why though, but now the temp is a constant 20...

    cider kits ?

Cider kits are made up exactly like single can beer kits, pour the kit into the fermenter then add water and sugar (table or brewing sugar) to make up 23 litres. If your doing a flavoured cider kit they usually come with a flavouring pouch that is added to the fermenter 2 days before...

    Coopers, Australian Pale Ale Review

I wasn't too fond of this one, there wasn't that much taste in at all. Mixed the kit with 550g of Light DME and 250g of caster sugar (sucrose). Light fruitiness but not enough of it and a mild bitterness, aroma smelt of sulphur for awhile then improved after a few weeks. Could be the sugar I...
