Will you drink in Wetherspoons when pubs re-open?

I wouldn’t willingly go into a Wetherspoons, but unfortunately it my Dad’s local. My Dad thinks the owner is a complete tool, as do I, but he simply can’t make the walk to next nearest pub. So given the choice I’d boycott them, but pragmatism dictates that I very occasionally visit one.

    Reusing Whirlpool Hops

It seemed to work pretty well and certainly hasn’t spoiled anything. I wouldn’t go out of my way to do it again but if the timings coincided again I’d happily repeat it.

    What did you brew today?

I did a repeat (to reuse the yeast if anything else) and removed the false bottom during the boil to make sure the hidden element didn’t scorch. Seemed to work well.

    What did you brew today?

Brewed my first proper wheat beer, using M20 yeast. Problem is that I managed to badly scorch the wort, time will tell if it’s drinkable or not!

    Priming beer with elderflower cordial...

I’ve done this loads of times. Works a treat. I avoid the cheaper cordials with lemon juice, although I’ve no evidence I don’t think the drop in pH would be a good idea.

    Reusing Whirlpool Hops

I had a very busy brew day today. As well as doing a full grain brew I had to move the previous batch out of the fermenter to a keg and then add keg hops to a 3rd batch that’d been cold conditioning for a while. So as I was timing the whirlpool hops (50g of whole citra in 21 litres at 78oC for...

    First Keezer Build

Two won’t fit by a matter of 3-4 mm diagonally so 3 definitely won’t fit. It’s been suggested that I ‘adjust’ the casing with a lump hammer!

    Bottle washing

If the bottle has visible residue inside, I use ‘Vanish’, or more specifically Asda’s own brand ‘for colours’ version (no whiteners or perfume). The oxygen and enzymes cut through just about anything, including burnt on yeast from when I used to heat sterilise in the oven. After the Vanish I...

    Top things to improve brews

Definitely? My first couple of kit brews were **** due to rushing. Then I learned patience... moved onto all grain and was still patient... Then I built a keezer and got all excited and my latest two were both under fermented and under conditioned!!

    And we worry about infection

I’ve been a microbiologist for over 25 years now and contamination is certainly something you should mitigate against. I’ve only ever had two contaminated batches (touch wood) but that’s two too many. All you need is one rouge bug in the wrong place and that’s it; brew ruined. Why take the risk...

    Co2 suppliers Liverpool?

I used CO2 services in Connah’s Quay, very handy for south wirral. £50 for full bottle, £20 to refill. Church St, Connah's Quay, Deeside CH5 4AR

    First Keezer Build

I think I’ve used the same freezer, but got mine 2nd hand so I can’t be sure. I can only fit 3 cornies in mine and that’s with an oversized 14 cm (from memory) collar. Two kegs don’t quite fit in the deepest part! I considered the narrower kegs but then they’d be too tall to stand on the inner...

Best Star SAN Alternative including all new Chemsan

I use Chemsan and it seems to work fine, although the solution is a bit cloudier than I remember Star San being.

    How do

I’ve been brewing for over 10 years now. Started with kits but am now fermenting my 45th all grain brew. My background is in science; degree in microbiology and PhD in chemical engineering so on paper I should know what I’m doing... I don’t! I live on The Wirral. I do BIAB in a 25 litre...
