    Lack of efficiency

Um, well I guess my fears were unfounded. Ended up at room temp with 17L @1.054 and it was supposed to be 1.044! After topping up with cold water I got 22L @ 1.044. Beginner's sparging error!

    Lack of efficiency

I did wonder about that. No: 1.008 is at about 80°C I'm guessing. I thought it wouldn't make sense to give the RT gravity when it is sparge temperature! Oh well, I guess I could have sparged a bit more then. Temp. of my sample is now at about 30°C and it's 1.047 so I guess I could have got...

    Lack of efficiency

Hi, I have been brewing full mash BIAB for a while and never worried too much about getting the quantities exactly right. I mostly use Wheeler recipes, often modified, but I put the correct amount of grains and hops in, get something like with the water (erring on the side of too little) and at...

    Caxton Real Ale

This kit was the first one I made after a bit of break from beer brewing, last September. Drinkable brew, nothing special but a good starting kit. Problem is, you get more picky the more you do :) Don't worry about the OG, if you put in what you are supposed to it'll turn out well. And 1.004...

    New aluminium boiler

I really don't think it's an electrolytic problem. This is brand new, has had water in it for a total of maybe 12 hours. There is a rubber seal between the tank coupler, which I believe is brass and the aluminium pot. The copper pipe connects to the brass coupler. There is no physical contact...

    Newbie brew.

Hey, another local brewer - welcome! (I am actually between Holmfirth and Wakefield. And Barnsley/Penistone  ). Firstly, you've had plenty of decent replies. But as for leaving it longer than the kit says, well, the kit instructions are very optimistic anyway. Go by gravity, but 2 weeks...

    New aluminium boiler

Hi, I have completed making my 36L boiler. I was a bit unsure whether aluminium was okay to use, but read on this forum that both stainless steel and aluminium were fine. Anyway, it looks like a boiler: And the interior plumbing looks like this: Anyway, I did a trial boil to check for...

    Honey Beer V2

I scrolled quickly down without reading all the text and saw the egg going in  It makes sense now :) I might have a go at your original recipe as an AG brew at some point. Will let you know if I do and how it goes.

    Brew in a bag?

I don't see why I can't boil my full wort volume - around 26 - 27L maybe? - in a 36L vessel, but I was warned at biabrewer that it would only be suitable for lower gravity beers - 1.040 - and I would need a bigger vessel for stronger beers. I'm not sure I agree. I don't think any topping up...

    Brew in a bag?

BIAB is the way forward for me, since I don't have the space to store so many vessels when not in use. I have a 36L pot I bought from an asian shop in Bradford for £25, have sewn my bag from voile I got off ebay, and have all the pipes and bits I need. Just need to drill the outlet in. I am...

anyone doing AG or HERMS near me ??

Forum map? Ooh, off to play with that now... 8-)

Secondary FV or no secondary FV , that is the question !

Batch priming in a secondary vessel certainly makes for better consistency, and I always do it if I can. In addition, it gets it off the sediment, so less chance of it getting in your bottles.

    Modified pale ale

Thanks for that - will definitely dry hop this as well.

    Modified pale ale

Not really, I have some acid malt I bought for use in some Adnam's recipes, so I thought I'd give it a go. Isn't it just supposed to give a better fermentation?

1st extract brew-Hop utilisation in a water only boil?

I have been doing a 9L boil for extracts and not upping the hops. I have noticed the beers tend to have a sweet maltiness to them (or is that a malty sweetness?), probably due to insufficient hop extraction. I quite like the taste actually, but definitely up the hops if you can.

    Modified pale ale

I'm hoping to brew this soon, it's a modification of a recipe I saw. I'm hoping it'll be a light coloured, good hop aroma ale. (23L) 4000g pale malt 230g acid malt 470g torrefied wheat 40g challenger hops (90min) 15g fuggles hops (10min) 10g cascade hops (post-boil) The recipe originally had...

Bulk buying DME - any suggestions

Thanks for listening oldstout! Nope, I play guitars.

    Dark colour, no flavour?

I had a bottle of Magic Rock Black IPA the other week. It's brewed local to me. I think they said they took the husks off the black malt so they got the black colour but not the flavour. It was as black as stout. Super bitter, though, but too strong for me.

Bulk buying DME - any suggestions

Free postage over about £60 I think: http://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk/ind ... cts_id=180 £14 for 3kg = £116.66 for 25kg (well, roughly, because you have to buy 3kg bags so you can't actually get 25kg). Seems to have just gone up, because I bought two bags of it for £13 each a couple of...

where's all the AG brewers gone

Well a friend of mine brewed his first kit beer last September, his first extract beer (with my guidance) in November, and his first all grain beer in March. He has since done about 3 AG brews. I have brewed kits on and off for years, started doing extract beers last September, did an AG with...
